This Couple Racked Up More Than 660,000 Kilometers in Their Mitsubishi Mirage

When Minnesota-based couple Jerry and Janice Huot looked for a fuel-efficient replacement to their Cadillac, they ended up getting a then-brand-new 2014 Mirage. Today, they’ve driven “Purple Won”—the name of their hatchback over 414,000 miles (666,268 kilometers).

While Janice drove it mostly for the first 7,000 miles (11,265 kilometers), when winter came, she decided she wanted all-wheel drive, and got an Outlander Sport. Since then, Jerry was the one who racked on the miles, using it for his business as a courier.

The diminutive hatchback never skipped a beat, according to Jerry. It got him up and out of gravel driveways, including the dead of winter, while others got stuck in snow.

Stored outside year-round, Jerry also used it to haul rocks and mulch for their yard. The only thing the Mirage asked for in return? Routine maintenance. He did admit though that the wheel bearings were replaced after about 150,000 miles (241,401 kilometers), and the starter motor between 200,000 and 300,000 miles (321,868 kilometers to 482,803 kilometers).

After six grueling winters in rural Minnesota, their story reached their dealership who wanted to use “Purple Won” for publicity and advertising. As a replacement, tey got a good deal on a 2020 Mirage in, of course, Plasma Purple.

  1. So a Mirage can last long with (I assume) a manual transmission. Pretty good. It's a shame though that everything else about it is outdated and underwhelming.
