MINI Embraces Big Grilles Starting with 2021 Three-Door Hardtop

Mini held out as much as they could, but it’s official: they’re now embracing big grilles. Beginning with the 2021 hardtop and convertible models, they’ll start sporting this new design DNA.

The new design features a new single unbroken hexagonal grille with higher performance models like the Cooper S and John Cooper Works getting a pair of additional air intakes to the left and right of the central intake. The air curtains have also been integrated on the front bumper and the front fog lamps have been removed. This hexagonal design is also seen at the rear, particularly the rear apron with the twin-tailpipe system now framed by body-colored surfaces. New side scuttle designs—the Mini term for the side garnish, wheel arches, and 17- or 18-inch wheels complete the changes.

As for colors, Mini is offering a multi-tone roof for the first time. This color gradient of blue, aqua, and black is possible thanks to a new painting technology implemented at the Oxford assembly plant.

In terms of tech, LED is now used exclusively for the headlights, side indicators, and taillights. Inside, there’s a new 8.8-inch screen in the center instruments with a new user-interface.

The 2021 Mini hardtop and convertible starts rolling out of the Oxford U.K. plant this March.
