Could The 2022 Hyundai Custo Make Sense For The Philippine Market?

Hyundai just loves their MPVs. After showing off the all-new Starex replacement, the 2022 Staria and the Creta-based Alcazar, the Korean automaker is coming out with this—the 2022 Hyundai Custo.

Set to make its debut at the upcoming Auto Shanghai, the Hyundai Custo is built at the carmaker’s joint-venture plant with BAIC—Beijing Hyundai (yes, the same plant that produces the Reina).

The Custo takes a decidedly American MPV styling direction fused with Hyundai’s new parametric design language. It doesn’t seem to escape crossover influences though with its front integrated skid plate and black cladding found on the wheel arches.

Leaks say the Custo will be offered in both 6- and 7-seater configurations with the highest trim models getting dual power sliding doors. It’ll also have an all-digital gauge cluster, and of course, the oh-so-common portrait-style infotainment touchscreen.

With the Staria still a question mark for the Chinese market, the Custo might take its place. It is based off the Kia Carnival platform so dimensionally, it sits close to its sibling at 4,950 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,734 mm tall. The wheelbase is at 3,055 mm.

So far, the Custo is strictly for Chinese domestic consumption, but given Philippine distributor Hyundai Asia Resources has sourced its Reina from there, chances are good for its local availability. This is especially true if the Staria’s pricing goes up considerably (which it might).

If that’s the case, there will be two powertrains available, a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower and a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 236 horsepower.

    1. This MPV shares the same platform as the New Kia Carnival so expect it to be more expensive than the Innova.
