Could the Refreshed MG5 Look Like This for Global Markets?

Late last year, MG showed off the all-new MG5—their compact car with a 173-horsepower heart. Now available for the Chinese market, of course, it had people asking how a potential global version would look like. Well, we now have the answer. Sort of.

MG’s parent company, SAIC believes that the key to enter Europe is by banking on battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. It’s for this reason they’re getting not just the MG ZS EV, but the new Marvel R Electric as well. Also set to join the European market is the new MG5 Electric (the current MG 5 Electric was just launched in late 2020).

Unlike the Chinese market version which keeps the platform but changes all exterior body panels, the global MG5 (at least in wagon form) is a heavily refreshed version of the current model. Regardless, MG says it is built with the same “Tech Style” elements that give it the appearance of a sophisticated and modern vehicle.

For Europe, the MG5 Electric offers more than 400 kilometers of range thanks to a lithium-ion battery mounted between the front and rear axles. The electric motor delivers a healthy 184 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. According to MG, 0 to 100 km/h takes 8.3 seconds. Its quick charging capacity can juice up this wagon from flat to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Will this how the global MG5 look like moving forward? With the exception of its BEV design cues such as the front-mounted charging port, that seems to be the case. Of course, we won’t know for sure which route MG will take in the Philippines, but which version gets your vote? The Chinese or European version?
