The Porsche 911 Turbo S Is The World Performance Car of the Year

A distinguished panel of 93 journalists coming from 28 countries have named the Porsche 911 Turbo S as the 2021 World Performance Car. This marks the seventh time a Porsche model has won the World Performance Car title, and the eighth victory for Porsche in the World Car Awards.

The 992-generation Porsche 911 Turbo S was chosen from a short list of nine performance cars, then selected from among the three finalists to clinch the vote as this year’s best performance model. The 2021 Top Three in the World finalists are the Audi RS Q8 and Toyota GR Yaris, along with the 911 Turbo.

To qualify for the World Performance Car award, a model must be overtly performance-focused in terms of character, and is sold in at least two major markets on at least two continents between May 1, 2020 and May 1, 2021. A minimum of 2,000 units of this model must have been produced as well.

“We could not be more excited to accept this award. The 911 Turbo S is the peak of performance and luxury from Porsche, a fact this recognition underscores. With the new generation 992, we continue to push the boundaries of performance,” said Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President for Model Line 911 and 718 at Porsche AG.

Powering the 992-generation 911 Turbo S—which has been available in Porsche Philippines’ showrooms since last year—is a new six-cylinder, 3.8-liter boxer engine producing 650 horsepower and 800Nm of torque—70ps and 50Nm more than what the previous engine made. Matched to an eight-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission that is specific to the Turbo models, the engine can propel the car from a standstill to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than before. Top speed of the all-new 911 Turbo S remains unchanged at 330km/h.

Declaring the performance-focused driving dynamics of the 911 Turbo S is an expanded body, which is now 45 millimeters wider above the front axle (at 1,840 millimeters) and 20 millimeters more above the rear axle (at 1,900 millimeters). This increases track by 42 millimeters in front and 10 millimeters at the back. Further contributing to the car’s agility and sportiness are its improved aerodynamics and new mixed-size tires—a first for the 911 Turbo S. Fitted to the front wheels are 20-inch tires with their unique 255/35 dimensions while the rear wheels are wrapped with 21-inch 315/30 tires.
