Stellantis, Foxconn To Work Together On Infotainment Systems

Stellantis (the automotive group known as Fiat Chrysler and PSA) and iPhone maker Foxconn is forming a new joint-venture to develop new infotainment systems that will be used not just by their brands’ cars, but will also be available for other carmakers as well.

Mobile Drive, as the joint-venture will be called, combines Stellantis’s global vehicle design and engineering expertise with Foxconn’s global development in the software and hardware realms of smartphones and consumer electronics. It will focus on infotainment, telematics and cloud service platform development with software innovations expected to include artificial intelligence-based applications, 5G communication, upgraded over-the-air services, e-commerce opportunities and smart cockpit integrations.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said that software has become a strategic move for the industry, and that his automotive group which includes brands such as Peugeot, Dodge, and Jeep thinks partnering with Foxconn will give it an edge, especially in connectivity.

Meanwhile, for Foxconn CEO Young Liu, their expansion into the automotive space is a natural one.

All development by Mobile Drive will be co-owned by Stellantis and Foxconn. The Netherlands-based joint venture will operate as an automotive supplier, competitively bidding to supply software solutions and related hardware for Stellantis, and other interested automakers.
