Toyota Sold Over 859,000 Vehicles In April

It looks like Toyota put the worst of the pandemic behind them as they secured global sales reaching 859,448 units in April 2021. It marks the eighth consecutive month of increase for the Japanese automaker.

Toyota’s three major markets—North America, China, and Japan were all up. North America sold some 272,000 units last month, driven by the RAV4, Highlander, and 4Runner. Moreover, their hybrid-electric Venza also proved to be strong. The same goes for China, where sales reached 160,000 driven by the Camry and RAV4. In Japan, despite declaration of state of emergency in major cities, sales still reached 124,000 thanks to the Harrier (aka Venza), and the Yaris.

In ASEAN, Indonesia managed to become Toyota’s largest market, selling 26,006. It overtook Thailand’s 19,150 figure. Toyota attributes this to the Indonesian government’s decision to exempt locally-assembled vehicles from luxury tax. Toyota Motor Philippines, meanwhile, reported 8,642 units sold last month.

For the first four months of 2021, Toyota has managed to sell 3,319,572 units already—up 33.4 percent from a year ago. Out of this number, 41,737 units were sold in the Philippines—a 62.2 year-on-year increase.

In terms of production, Toyota has managed to brush off the global chip shortage, producing a total of 761,459 units in April. Out of this, 3,921 units were produced in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

From January to April 2021, Toyota has produced 3,014,557 units—a year-on-year increase of 27.8 percent. For Toyota Motor Philippines, the number of Vios and Innova units produced locally reached 15,447 units—an increase of 69.6 percent from a year ago.
