Honda Unveils 2022 Civic Hatchback

After showing it off in sedan form, Honda has now shown what the 11th generation Civic Hatchback looks like in full. And this is it.

The 2022 Civic Hatchback builds upon the sedan’s new exterior design with its low hood, front fenders, and horizontal beltline. That said, it does incorporate unique styling cues such as a mesh grille with a slight concave shape and a new rear that makes it 124 mm shorter than the sedan. The hatch itself is made of a lightweight composite material, while the hinge mechanism has been moved outward allowing a roof height reduction of 50 mm. The hatchback also gets a unique taillight design and a third brake light that spans nearly the entire width of the tailgate.

Powering the Civic Hatchback (at least) in the U.S. is either a normally-aspirated 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder, both of which are engines shared with the sedan. The hatchback though gets a 6-speed manual option. According to Honda, the 6-speed manual has been reworked for an even sportier feel with improved shift rigidity and shorter throws. A new dual-mass flywheel helps reduce noise and vibration as well. Of course, a belt-driven CVT is also available. In Japan, the Civic does not get the normally-aspirated 2.0, but does also get the 1.5-liter turbo. It also gets the e:HEV two-motor gasoline-electric hybrid system.

Inside, the Civic Hatchback has an interior shared with the sedan. At the back, however, it features larger side windows, a new small corner window in the C-pillar and a single piece rear window to enhance rearward visibility, creating a more spacious and airy feeling for rear seat passengers. Rear legroom is also up by 35 mm compared to before, while the cargo lip is wider by 40 mm with a lower lift-over height.

Honda has confirmed that the all-new Civic Hatchback will form the basis of the all-new Civic Type R which will return in 2022.

Sales of the Civic Hatchback starts in Japan this August, while Europe gets it in the third quarter of 2022.
