The All-New 2022 Geely Emgrand Could Worry Honda Civic SiR Owners

The Geely Coolray has made waves in the Philippines. Pundits (including us, because we named it as one of our Top Picks last year) aside, it became viral when it beat a Honda Civic SiR in a drag race. But what if that very same platform now finds itself underpinning a sedan? That is happening real soon.

Set for a full unveil in the coming weeks is Geely’s fourth-generation Emgrand compact sedan. China’s largest privately owned vehicle brand has yet to reveal details about the 2022 Emgrand, but they did say that it’s a product of consumer feedback. It will, in their words, “emphasize value and technology.”

They did release teaser photos and it is very clear it will gain styling similar to the Geely Preface and Coolray. It also looks to gain a high-tech looking interior with an LCD instrument cluster and switchgear plucked straight from Volvo. Interestingly, it does not seem to inherit the Coolray’s electronic shifter, going for something more mainstream instead.

Geely also confirmed the platform. It will ride on their B-segment Modular Architecture or BMA, the very same platform that underpins the Coolray and the ICON SUV. This could easily mean that the all-new Emgrand will share its powertrain with the Coolray. Imagine, the 177 horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder is already pretty potent in the Coolray, so it will likely do better in a lighter, more aerodynamic sedan. We’re pretty sure Civic SiR owners are getting worried.

Anyhow, the Emgrand will be involved in the 2022 Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China. And as part of Geely Auto’s activities, it will undertake a ten-city tour across China to promote the event, which begins in September 2022.
