Porsche Confirms Malaysian Production To Start In 2022

Porsche has confirmed what reports from early this year were pointing to: the German automaker will start assembly in Malaysia.

The production site in Malaysia will open in 2022, and be operated in partnership with Malaysian trading conglomerate Sime Darby Berhad. The facility will be responsible for the final assembly of models made exclusively for the Malaysian market.

Porsche hasn’t given any indications as to what these models may be, but the safe bet would be its two SUVs—the Cayenne (top picture) and the Macan. These two models represent the highest volume models for the automaker.

Porsche also hasn’t given any indication whether the new assembly plant will serve as an assembly hub for ASEAN markets.

According to Porsche, Southeast Asia represents a very dynamic market with “significant growth and innovation potentials.” With careful planning, the new Malaysian assembly will work in lockstep with Porsche’s current European production lines to meet current and future global demand.

Meanwhile, Porsche will open an R&D location in Shanghai, China to help the brand increase the understanding of Chinese customers and their requirements, as well as improve local product development.

Porsche delivered its first sports cars to mainland China 20 years ago. Since then, it has become the company’s largest single market, with 88,968 deliveries last year.

Porsche also recently opened a new parts distribution center in the southeast city of Dongguan, taking the number of after sales parts centers around the world to 16.
