The Land Rover Defender 90 Is Going Racing Thanks To Bowler

Bowler Motors, the high-performance division of Land Rover is sending the all-new Defender rallying with a one-make championship in 2022.

The Bowler Defender Challenge is based off the Land Rover Defender 90 (read our review here) with a 300-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. Bowler though modified the front-end for increased cooling and additional race-level lighting. The powertrain changes are capped off by a repositioned gear selector and column-mounted paddle shifters.

Then, Bowler trimmed the doors to remove the sill covering section which allows the fitment of full-length, side-to-side underbody protection panels. The stripped-down interior also features racing bucket seats and a full FIA-standard roll cage.

The front and rear subframes have also been modified with additional bracing, while a new performance suspension system with Fox shock absorbers increases the ride height by 25 mm. The exterior changes are capped off with rally-spec 18-inch wheels.

The Bowler Defender will run in a one-make series—the Bowler Defender Challenge—which is sadly, a UK exclusive in 2022.

Each race is billeted as a “true rally” with a full Bowler support team and dedicated service areas. A hospitality area will help drivers and teams make the most of downtime and attend briefings throughout the events.

Packages for the 2022 Challenge will start at £99,500 (around P 6.7 million) which is about double a road-going Defender 90 P300 in the UK. Surprisingly, training, series logistics, and vehicle support come separate.
