Toyota Reveals 2022 Land Cruiser GR Sport Details

When Toyota unveiled the all-new Land Cruiser 300 globally, they didn’t mention much about the full-sized SUV’s first-ever Gazoo Racing treatment, the Land Cruiser GR Sport. That’s all changed as they’ve finally spilled the beans at its Japanese market launch.

For starters, the Land Cruiser GR Sport stands out with its sportier exterior design. It gets unique bumpers, grille, black wheel arch molding, rocker moldings, door handles and mirrors, and Mud Gray 18-inch wheels. Inside, it continues with a special leather-wrapped steering wheel with a carbon-weave, exclusive two-tone black and dark red seats with sportier front buckets.

Unlike other GR Sport models (yes, we’re talking about you, Vios GR Sport), the Land Cruiser GR Sport gets actual performance improvements. Here though, it’s focused on improving the Land Cruiser’s already venerable off-road capability.

The Land Cruiser GR Sport is differentiated by its revised rear suspension that along with Electronic-Kinematic Dynamic Suspension System or E-KDSS improves road-holding performance after jumps at medium to high-speed in undulating sections.

E-KDSS automatically and electronically controls each front and rear stabilizer independently, reacting to road conditions and the individual conditions of each of the four wheels to provide more precise stabilization adjustments.

Other additions to the Land Cruiser GR Sport include a standard electric front and rear differential lock.

All in all, Toyota says the all-new Land Cruiser has a 32-degree approach, 25-degree breakover, and 26-degree departure angle. It can also climb inclines up to 45 degrees and go sideways on 44-degree inclines. Water wading depth is set at 700 millimeters which is similar to the Fortuner and Hilux.

Engine-wise, the Land Cruiser GR Sport though comes in either gasoline or diesel-fed versions. The gasoline uses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 415 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, while the 3.3-liter twin-turbo diesel V6 has 309 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. Both versions are mated to a 10-speed automatic.

To prove the merits of the Land Cruiser’s Gazoo Racing version, Toyota has already announced that they will take it racing at the 2023 Dakar Rally.
