Dakar Rally-Bound Gazoo Racing Hilux T1+ Uses The Land Cruiser 300's V6 Engine

Toyota is taking another crack at the Dakar Rally with an all-new truck: the GR DKR Hilux T1+.

For 2022, the team is developing a new version of the Toyota Dakar Hilux, based on the latest rules. The new Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ will share components with the race-proven Hilux that was first introduced in 2018, and won the race in 2019, but will feature a host of improvements including bigger running gear—tires of 37 inches, up from 32 inches; together with a tread increase from 245 mm to 320 mm. The new car also has more suspension travel with the previous limit of 280 mm now increased to 350 mm.

Under the hood, the Hilux also swaps its V8 engine for a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. If this engine seems familiar, it’s the same one used in the all-new Land Cruiser 300 GR Sport. Toyota doesn’t want to quote power figures in the new racing truck, but in production trim, it does 415 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 650 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm.

While the race itself is slated to start on January 2, 2022, Toyota is already hard at work shaking the new Hilux down. The prototype car, finished in raw carbon fiber finish is being put through its paces with an official reveal later this year. As in 2021, the works team will be spear-headed by Nasser Al-Attiyah and navigator Mathieu Baumel. Giniel de Villiers will be partnered with navigator Dennis Murphy; Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings will return for their second Dakar; and Shameer Variawa will now be partnered with navigator Danie Stassen.
