Here's Your Official Look At The 2022 Toyota Avanza

After a series of leaks, leaks, and more leaks, Toyota has finally unveiled the all-new 2022 Avanza. Showcased in Indonesia, where it will be the star of Toyota’s stand at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), the all-new entry-level MPV gains massive changes from the top down.

The most obvious change is the platform. Eschewing its rear-wheel drive, body-on-frame platform, the all-new Avanza now shifts to a unibody, front-wheel drive platform co-developed with Toyota’s sister company, Daihatsu. The DNGA, as the platform is called, stretches the MPV’s wheelbase while also improving its overall packaging and efficiency.

Despite the platform shift, Toyota has opted to carryover the powertrains. This means that the Avanza will be available in both 1.3-liter (1NR-VE) and 1.5-liter (2NR-VE) flavors. The now transverse-mounted engines make 90 horsepower and 121 Nm of torque or 106 horsepower and 137 Nm of torque. This is connected to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT.

The bigger, bolder Avanza carries standard LED taillights and 15-inch alloy wheels (no more steelies). Going up just one variant level already gains the buyer LED headlights, power retractable mirrors, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The top-trim Veloz adds even more with distinctive front- and rear-end designs, sequential turn signal lights, front puddle lamps, a full backdoor-type LED taillights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

While the nameplate isn’t known for packaging efficiency, the 2022 Avanza aims to change that. Standard across the range is what Toyota calls “Long Sofa Mode.” This seating allows either the first-row seats to fold back to meet the second-row, or the second-row seats to fold forward creating a foot rest for those in the third-row.

Features include a 4.2-inch TFT gauge cluster, a digital-type AC system, and a 7 or 9-inch infotainment system. Meanwhile, the Veloz adds more equipment with leather/fabric combination seats, soft-padded arm rests, a 7-inch digital-type instrument cluster, a rear-seat entertainment system, wireless charger, and a 360-degree camera.

In terms of safety, dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and seatbelt minder for all three rows is standard across the range, while the highest-speced 1.5-liter Avanza and Veloz gets 6 airbags and Toyota Safety Sense or TSS. TSS gives Toyota’s entry-level MPV lane departure assist, pedal misoperation control, front departure alert, pre-collision system, rear cross traffic alert, and blind spot monitoring.

Sales of the all-new 2022 Avanza and Veloz starts in Indonesia start right now with plans to export it to other markets in ASEAN, including the Philippines by next year.
