The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Recalls The Brand's Legendary Sports Prototypes

Ferrari has revealed its latest member of its “Icona” line of supercars. Called the Ferrari Daytona SP3, it takes its name from the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona in which three of the brand’s race cars finished 1-2-3.

The Daytona SP3 takes its basic design and layout from similarly-vintage mid-engine race cars. Here, it means getting the 812 Superfast’s 6.5-liter V12. Keeping its 9,500 rpm redline, it produces 840 horsepower and 697 Nm of torque making it the most powerful normally-aspirated, non-hybrid, road-going Ferrari in history. Paired with a 7-speed dual clutch, it reaches the 100 km/h mark in just 2.85 seconds and 200 km/h in 7.4.

Surrounding the engine is a body and chassis made entirely of composite materials, much of which is carbon fiber, such as the main tub. The shape is clearly inspired by vintage Ferrari endurance cars such as the 330 P3 and P4, but also the 512 S which also partly inspired the stylistic code. It also has butterfly doors.

The interior is also race car-inspired. The seats are molded into the chassis, with cushions attached directly to the tub. The snug driving environment also has the lowest seating position of any current Ferrari. Still, the pedals and steering wheel adjusts accommodating drivers of various heights. The slender, taut dashboard seems almost to float within the upholstery. Its styling theme develops on two levels: the upper trimmed shell, which has a clean, sculptural look, is separated from the lower one with a clear textural and functional dividing line. Functions are handled by a 16-inch screen directly in front of the driver.

Like the other members of the Icona line—the Monza SP1 and SP2, the Daytona SP3 will only be available to Ferrari’s top clients and collectors. These people serve as ambassadors to the Prancing Horse marque.
