Will The 2023 Subaru WRX STI Look Something Like This?

After the all-new Subaru WRX was shown, there was some trepidation surrounding its design, and how that will translate to the top-dog WRX STI. Not due until the 2023 model year (it is expected to make its global debut sometime in 2022 though), the design direction could be previewed by this: the WRX STI Performance Concept.

Set to make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, Subaru takes the all-new WRX and gives it an aggressive aero treatment. The WRX STI Performance Concept wears a wraparound kit painted in STI’s trademark cherry red color as well as a large rear wing. Sadly, the controversial black wheel fenders remain since they serve an integral aerodynamic function to the car says Subaru.

Being a concept, don’t expect Subaru to reveal performance details on this tuned version of the WRX. Based on past STI Performance models though, expect it to have added chassis and suspension bracing, new alloy wheels, and a sportier looking interior.

Anyway, there’s still some hope yet for the full-blown WRX STI. STI Performance isn’t to be mistaken for the top-tier STI brand. Instead, think of STI Performance as Subaru’s version of Toyota’s GR Sport (as opposed to the plain and simple GR). With that, it’s still possible, though we’re not holding our breath, that the 2023 WRX STI will look much more differentiated than the rather controversial WRX.
