Jeep Debuts New Electrified Engines For 2022 Compass, Renegade SUVs

After offering Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) variants of its Compass and Renegade SUVs last year, Jeep is now extending its electrified offerings to include self-charging hybrids.

The new models debut an advanced hybrid system featuring a new 4-cylinder 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine from Stellantis’ Global Small Engine family which delivers 130 horsepower and 240 Nm of torque coupled with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic.

Meanwhile, the propulsion system includes a built-in 48-volt 15kW (20 horsepower) electric motor delivering 55 Nm of torque, equivalent to 135Nm at gearbox input level, which can propel the wheels even when the combustion engine is turned off. It can also provide so-called “e-Boosting” which delivers increased torque to the driven wheels.

The new engine is also designed for efficiency. It operates on the Miller cycle which improves thermal efficiency and offers a high compression ratio (12.5:1). New features include a new cylinder head with compact combustion chamber, dual variable valve timing and special ‘high-tumble’ intake ducts. Also new is the high-pressure direct injection system. A belt starter generator is also installed in the petrol engine, to guarantee fast and silent transitions when restarting.

Furthermore, the braking system of the Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid includes the Intelligent Brake System which includes an ‘auto-charge’ feature using mixed regenerative braking to maximize the recovery of kinetic energy and improves efficiency.

For now, Jeep will roll out the Compass and Renegade e-Hybrid to markets in Europe where its plug-in hybrid line, 4xe now accounts for more than 25 percent of sales. Jeep has also confirmed that its Grand Cherokee mid-sized SUV will also benefit from a plug-in hybrid powertrain by the middle of 2022.
