Check Out Chevrolet's New Active Safety Test Track


General Motors has just revealed its new active safety test road at the Cheong-na Proving Ground in Korea.

With the GM Technical Center Korea (GMTCK) taking the lead on R&D programs centered around the carmaker’s crossover vehicles such as the recently launched Trailblazer, the new active safety test source will help them play a pivotal role as the second largest product engineering center.

The new four-lane road has a length of 600 meters and a width of 60 meters. It can carry out validation of new vehicle evaluation systems such as Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Rear Cross Traffic Braking (RCTB), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), in alignment with the scenarios used in the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

These features come standard on the Philippine spec Trailblazer launched last October.

With the completion of the active safety test road, the Cheong-na Proving Ground will further enhance GMTCK’s competitiveness by remodeling buildings and test tracks by the end of this year. The Cheong-na Proving Ground and its more than 3,000 engineers are supporting more than 20 programs globally under development. 

In addition to the Cheong-na Proving Ground, GMTCK’s organizations and facilities for GM’s cutting-edge global vehicle development include a design center, a vehicle engineering center, and a manufacturing engineering center.

The GMTCK Cheong-na Proving Ground was completed in September 2007 in the Incheon Free Economy Zone, about 20 minutes (10 kilometers) from GM Korea’s headquarters in Bupyeong, Incheon. 

The facility, which spans 508,228 square meters, has various engineering facilities such as a brake laboratory, vehicle dynamic laboratory, structural/RLDA laboratory, climate wind tunnel laboratory, and noise and vibration laboratory, where about 500 engineers are in charge of vehicle engineering. It is equipped with special test roads that are an exact replica of local roads in major export markets. Its climate wind tunnel laboratory was the first in the world to have a Full Automatic Temperature Control (FATC) system that controls temperature and humidity.
