Malaysian-Built Peugeot 2008 Destined For Philippines Rolls Off The Assembly Line

Peugeot has announced that its all-new Peugeot 2008 sub-compact SUV has just rolled off the assembly line in Gurun, Malaysia in route to ASEAN markets. The French carmaker’s parent company, Stellantis, has confirmed that it will join the new 3008 and new 5008 as part of their efforts to internationalize the brand.

The Gurun plant has set high safety and quality standards, and is increasing its production capacity since Stellantis acquired it in November 2021. The Stellantis Group acquired ownership of NAZA Automotive manufacturing and its Gurun Kedah production facility in Malaysia in October 2021. Its 170 employees and 50 local suppliers have been ramping up production since late 2021.

“The new Peugeot 2008 is built in ASEAN (Association of South East Asia Nations) for ASEAN. This is an important step to enlarge our manufacturing footprint in the region. It is the first example of our ambition to expand the portfolio of Stellantis vehicles built in South East Asia.” Said Christophe Musy, Senior Vice President, ASEAN & General Distributors at Stellantis.

Before being launched, the Peugeot 2008 underwent over 200,000 kilometers of additional endurance and reliability testing in the diverse local climate and environmental landscapes of South East Asia.

For its debut market of Malaysia, the 2008 is offered with a 1.2-liter PureTech turbocharged 3-cylinder gasoline engine with 130 horsepower mated to a 6-speed automatic. This powertrain combination will also likely make its way to export markets such as the Philippines.

The Peugeot 2008 features the dynamic, sculpted design of the European model, as well as the vertical front light signature and three-claw LED lights. The car features the technological i-Cockpit 3D, and the latest generation of driving aids including Automatic Emergency Braking, which also detects both pedestrians and cyclists, day or night, High Beam Assist (HBA), Active Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Active Blind Spot Monitoring, and Front and Rear Parking Sensors with Rear Camera.

Peugeot has confirmed that the new 2008 will be launched in other Southeast Asian countries within the year, in both right- and left-hand drive versions.
