Nissan Aims To Go Pole To Pole With Ariya SUV To Prove That EVs Can

Scottish adventurer Chris Ramsey hopes to be the first person to travel from pole to pole with a little help from Nissan’s all-electric SUV, the Ariya.

Set to depart in March 2023, the Pole to Pole Expedition will see Ramsey and his Nissan Ariya travel over 27,000 kilometers across several regions and continents with predicted temperatures ranging from minus 30 degrees to plus 30 degrees Celsius. Ramsey will drive through North, Central, and South America before crossing to Antarctica.

In preparation for the brutal Arctic and Antarctic conditions, Ramsey’s expedition Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE will be modified and equipped by Arctic Trucks, a renowned specialist in polar vehicles. They will also provide logistical support and expertise to help plan a safe and accessible route through the most remote and hostile environments on Earth. A second, unmodified Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE will act as a support vehicle throughout the Americas.

While much of the attention will rightly be on the polar regions, the team will face numerous challenges crossing Arctic sea ice and traversing the Americas. The myriad of harsh environments is sure to prove tough, from torrential rain, mud and soaring temperatures at the equator to the windswept altitude of the Andes.

This high-profile, challenging and exhilarating adventure supports Nissan Ambition 2030, the company’s long-term vision to empower mobility and beyond with electrification as a central focus. The vision aims to deliver exciting vehicles and technologies that empower customer journeys and society.

Moreover, the focus of the expedition is to raise international awareness of the climate crisis and electric vehicle capability, but Ramsey and the team will also get involved with local projects along the way, including visiting a school that teaches children about renewable energy, and venturing into the Ecuadorian Amazon to meet a local tribe who protected their ancestral home.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first all-electric expedition for Chris Ramsey. He’s been adventuring in electric vehicles for over a decade. In 2017, he and wife, Julie, became the first team to complete the Mongol Rally in an all-electric vehicle. The pair travelled over 16,000 kilometers through multiple locales over 56 days in his own Nissan Leaf.

Back in 2015, Chris tackled the 1,625-mile (2,615-kilometer) journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End and back again in a Nissan Leaf 24kWh, completing the journey in two days using only publicly available and free EV charging points.
