Toyota in Australia is marking the end of an era as it announced the discontinuation of its pioneering hybrid electric vehicle, the Prius, down under.
In a span of 20 years, the Prius has sold around 20,847 examples in Australia. Combined with the smaller Prius C and the larger Prius V, Toyota sold a total of 35,947 units there.
The introduction of the Prius, which laid down the foundation for Toyota’s electrification efforts not just in Australia, but globally, will be carried on, at least in spirit, by the increased hybridization of its line-up.
For the Philippine market, the Prius is still technically available for P 2,389,000. However, Australia’s move may be a writing on the wall for the pioneering hybrid hatchback (the Prius C has already been discontinued locally). Currently, it’s already on an indent order basis which can take up to six months of fulfill. Moreover, it hasn’t received any substantial update since its market launch way back in 2016.
Regardless, the Prius did pave the way for Filipinos to embrace Toyota’s hybrid technology which can now be seen in the Corolla Altis, Corolla Cross, Camry, RAV4, and reportedly, soon on the Alphard as well.
Appeal to the Phil. govt: Please make EVs a lot more affordable (thru the EV law, Executive Order, etc., etc.).
ReplyDeleteI hope the government does away with this incredibly oppressive tax scheme for imported cars.
ReplyDeleteWhat is even the point? We don't have a local car industry to protect anyway. Let people have nice cars.
both the train law and the temporary safeguard duty further exacerbated the already weakened auto manufacturing industry. Also the fact that importing cbu units is cheaper than assembling here, which is honestly.....:/ idk why they won't fix that.....
