All-New 2022 Kia Carens Showed Unstable Structure, Nets 3-Star Safety Rating

Kia’s re-born Carens MPV which is made for developing markets such as India (and rumored also to arrive in Southeast Asia) received a 3-star safety rating by the Global New Car Assessment Program or Global NCAP.

The 7-seater Korean MPV scored a 3 out of 5 stars for Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) and 3 out of 5 stars for Child Occupant Protection (COP).

The made in India Carens was tested in its most basic safety specification, fitted with two frontal airbags, two side body airbags, and two side head protection airbags. Stability control is also a standard fit in this spec. The Carens was also side impact tested and fulfilled the UN95 regulatory requirement.

However, the Carens demonstrated an unstable structure, marginal protection to the driver’s chest and weak protection to the driver’s feet. Global NCAP noted that the model is still sold with a lap belt in the rear central seating position instead of a three-point seatbelt—the norm in Korean-branded vehicles.
Though unconfirmed, the Carens will also be the platform-mate of the upcoming Hyundai Stargazer, and left unimproved, could foreshadow the sort of crash safety rating Hyundai’s first-ever Low MPV would get.

Starting next month, the Global NCAP plans to tighten its assessment protocols by introducing a tougher side impact test along with making stability control and pedestrian protection requirements mandatory.
