Hino Gets Kicked Out Of Japanese Commercial Vehicle Group

In light of the emissions scandal rocking Hino Motors, the Japanese truck maker has just been expelled from a technology consortium it helped founded a little over a year ago.

The Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation (CJPT), which was founded in April 2021 by Toyota, Hino, and Isuzu, was to help transition Japanese commercial vehicle makers for the shift to battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and self-driving technologies. Suzuki and Daihatsu joined the group later to focus on micro trucks.

However, in light of the embarrassing emissions and fuel efficiency scandals affecting Hino, they’ve been expelled out of the group. In a statement, Toyota says Hino’s “misconduct” was incompatible with the group (CJPT)’s “aspiration and goals.”

This decision casts a cloud over Hino’s future direction.

Hino fell into trouble in March with the revelation that it had been falsifying emissions and fuel economy data dating back as far as 2003. The scandal snowballed this week when Hino said new problems were discovered in a light-duty engine, after earlier revelations in other powerplants.

Hino employees falsified tests on engines used in 643,635 vehicles over the years, with 66,817 of the trucks now subject to recall (at least in Japan).

The truck maker has blamed the missteps on workers being overburdened by the fast pace of work and on a corporate culture that discouraged people from reporting problems to management.

  1. it's a bit ironic that Toyota's reprimanding one of their subsidiaries, so I guess Hino's has complete independence on its operations.....
