Toyota Updates Fortuner For 2023

Knowing the fierce competition in the mid-sized SUV segment, Toyota has decided to give its Fortuner a nip-and-tuck for the 2023 model year.

First unveiled for the Thai market, the 2023 Fortuner drops the approach of offering two different facias for its entry-level and top-trim models. Instead, the Legender (Philippine market LTD) face is now standard even on the entry-level model. In Thailand, it also gains a new variant name: Fortuner Leader.

The Fortuner Leader 2.4 G and Fortuner 2.4 V gets features that used to be exclusive to the Legender/LTD such as the LED headlights, unique grille, bumpers, and two-tone 18-inch wheels. Inside, it also adds an auto-dimming rear view mirror, dual climate control, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a powered driver’s seat, and leather upholstery.

The safety system has also been upgraded thanks to the addition of blind spot indicators with rear cross traffic alert, stability control, traction control, and hill start assist.

Meanwhile, the Legender/LTD continues unchanged for 2023. This variant, along with the sportier GR Sport gets a unique headlight treatment, sequential turn signal indicators, and 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, it has a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless charging, and ambient interior lighting. It also adds the rest of the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) system adding pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, and adaptive cruise control to its list of safety features.

Still no word at this point if Toyota Indonesia (where the Philippines sources its Fortuner SUVs) will follow suit, but at this point, it’s very likely. Expect it to make an appearance likely towards the end of the year, or early next year if ever.

    2. Once a month lang kayo may karga sa likod? Maybe you should reevaluate before buying an SUV in the first place..

    3. Most buyers I think never use the 3rd row seat. They buy SUVs because it has a high ground clearance and it is popular. Even though some only use it in the city with very tight parking spots...

    4. Toyota can't modify it to be a fold flat seat in the third row due to the design of the rear floor and fuel tank of it 🤣Too late for Toyota to do that.

    5. Had the previous gen fortuner and now driving the current gen. I will NOT buy the next gen if the seats will still fold this way.

    6. That means your current Fortuner will be your last SUV. Toyota will be moving to flat folding seats because that is what the majority wants.

    7. I like Fortuner but big setback is back seats do not fold in this is year 2023 and above $70 thousand price tag at least Toyota can do is fold the seats down and put AirBags in whole car.

    8. This is also the reason why i wont buy because of the design at the back seat still on sideway and it is so annoying.

  3. The PPV segment is slowing down here in the Philippines in favor of crossovers and actual pickups. The Fortuner and Montero are now selling slower compared to their pickup counterparts which are the Hilux and Strada, respectively. This wasn't the case just a few years ago.

I think Filipinos have finally realized that these PPVs offer the "worst of both worlds". It offers none of the versatility and cargo capacity of a pickup while being just as unrefined and cumbersome to drive. (I tried a Fortuner and was surprised how much of a Hilux it felt despite the coils at the back. I believe it will be the same for the Montero vs Strada, Terra vs Navara, MU-X vs D-Max, etc) It has nowhere near the comfort of a modern crossover and has less interior volume because of the ladder frame chassis, but yet even crossovers are rugged enough for Philippine roads. The PPVs that make sense are the 4x4 versions since atleast those make use of the tough ladder frame, but the 4x2s are bad off-road, horrible to drive, and hopelessly impractical, especially the Fortuner with side-folding 3rd row seats.

Manufacturers making SUV versions of pickups is a lazy effort to make a "new" product wherein 90% of the R&D was already done with the pickup versions, while charging significantly more $$$. And the laziness shows when you drive these SUVs.

    1. LOLOL even pickup owners in the Philippines dont use their pickups cargo capacity to its full extent. The reason people buy these pickups and suvs is for the exterior size because larger = better car to filipino buyers. These people dont care how their car drives as long as it has that status symbol, but this is what they choose and i guess they are happy with that despite the many negatives. Ignorance is bliss

    2. Fortuner,Terra and Montero Sport are still selling very well..The government plans to remove the tax exemption of pickup trucks soon as many people don't use their pickup trucks for business use and they're using it for porma use.

    3. On point! I sold our innova and mux and replaced them with gasoline powered crossovers.

  5. Diesel nowadays are more expensive than gas. So those PPVs have unrefined engines, unrefined rides, expensive maintenance, lesser versatility. Too bad those PPV owners always compare cars against their PPVs and declare "matagtag" when in fact they should have just bought a car-based MPV, crossover, or a mini-.Van.

    1. I doubt it will be launched by December this year. Mid Feb 2023 the earliest. Based on the pattern how TMPI hold vehicle launches in the past.
