Toyota Details All-New 2023 Vios's 1.5-liter Engine

After its launch in Thailand and Laos, Indonesia is the third ASEAN market to get the all-new 2023 Vios and this time, we know exactly how the 1.5-liter variant is shaping up.

With the sub-compact sedan market shrinking in Indonesia, Toyota Indonesia has made the decision trim the number of Vios variants available there to just three. And all are now powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine—a move that shadows its chief rival, the Honda City.

Unsurprisingly, Toyota has decided to switch from the 1.5-liter 2NR-FE in the current model in favor of the Daihatsu-assembled 2NR-VE for the all-new Vios. Shared with the Veloz and Avanza, this engine makes similar outputs—105 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. Mated to the solitary engine option is a CVT, with the manual now on indent order with a three-month wait.

Chassis-wise, all CVT-equipped variants get standard four-wheel disc brakes as well as an electronic parking brake system with auto hold. Going for the manual gearbox brings back rear drums as well as a traditional hand brake.

The 2023 Vios gets fastback-like styling, LED headlights and rear combination lights, and standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 205/50 R 17 tires for the CVT variants (the MT gets 195/60 R 16 wheels and tires). Inside, it has a 9-inch floating infotainment system, a 7-inch TFT display in its instrument cluster, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, and a built-in air purifier system.

On the top-of-the-line variant, the all-new Vios gets Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) which bundles adaptive cruise control, pre-collision warning with pre-collision braking, front departure alert, lane departure warning with lane departure prevention, pedal misoperation control, and automatic high beam. It also has 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, blind spot indicators, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear parking camera.

For the Indonesian market, the all-new Vios will be imported CBU from Thailand. According to Toyota, the decision to switch sourcing is down to the strong demand for the Avanza and Veloz which is taking up majority of their production capacity.

Pricing for the Vios in Indonesia starts at 314,900,000 IDR (P 1.206 million) and tops out at 368,400,000 IDR (P 1.411 million).

  1. Aight, keep in mind that this is expensive because is straight up CBU, not CKD anymore because you know, sedan market are almost non-existent in Indonesia except premium car market. But there's a possibility they're going to assemble the Hatchback version.

    1. Yup. That's true. This new Vios is now CBU Thailand. Looks like Toyota Motor PH may move in that direction too...

    2. But the Recent installation of Solar Panels makes more feasible to assemble Daihatsu-based Toyota Vehicles here in the Philippines through DNGA Platform and the next Innova which is based on the TNGA-C platform is still uncertain as of this moment.

    3. UnknownPanda (Keane Verneth Calimlim) instead of worrying of the PH production of the 2023 Vios not happening in favor if importing it from Thailand, please just stop commenting about it as TMP also previously imported the first gen Vios a long time ago. It will still take a long time to retool the Santa Rosa plant and in the meantime, TMP will most likely import the 2023 Vios from Thailand.

  2. What by the way are the difference between 2nr-fe and 2nr-ve aside similar outputs? Is there a way the other's cheaper or more refined or something?

    1. It's the same, but Toyota gives the distinction to to the "VE" as an engine assembled by Daihatsu.

    2. The VE using steel block while the FE using Aluminum block

    3. "Wikipedia will tell you otherwise, saying that the Daihatsu's 2NR-VE is an steel block while the Toyota's 2NR-FE is an aluminum block. This is incorrect. Both engines are now aluminum blocks and a simple inspection under the hood will confirm it. Both the 2NR-VE and 2NR-FE have the same 1,496 cc displacement."

    4. Wait, they changed it or it was never different to begin with?

    5. It underwent a change but Toyota kept the engine code the same.

  3. City has better power output but the disc brakes, electronic parking brake system with auto hold, and 17inch standard wheels, and Toyota Safety Sense makes Vios more enticing.

Honda should update City with its proprietary Sensing.

    1. Adding the SENSING ADAS to the City RS Sedan will likely gonna make it way more expensive (nobody would buy a City RS Sedan at 1.2 Million Pesos)..HCPI wants to focus on selling affordable vehicles.

    2. Cars are upgrading and getting pricier every gen. With Vios getting Toyota Safety Sense thereby upping its price at (possibly) 1.2m, it gives green light to Honda to put Sensing (and also increase price of City). Retaining City RS without any update will go against the position of Honda as more premium than Toyota.

  4. If the all-new Vios will be assembled in Thailand, so only the Innova will be assembled locally. Am I correct?

    1. There's still a possibility that the New Vios will be assembled locally..New Innova Zenix is gonna be a hybrid FWD MPV so most likely its still assembled locally..TMPC invested hundred millions of dollars in the local plant.

  5. They've really focused on putting more Daihatsu parts in the new Vios in order to make it much cheaper.
My guess we'll see the New Toyota Vios by around January or February 2023 in the local market as its unrealistic they'll bring in the new units by November and December this year.

    1. Too late to bring in thousand units in the next two months..TMPC will announce something about that in Christmas time.

  6. I like how Toyota used white as its promotional color for the Vios. It sure knows its audience

  7. i get your joke but white black gray and silver are the top colors people buy in cars

    1. That is true. It's just that there are implications when a Vios is painted white.

    2. Would it matter if it was "pearl white"? Lol

  8. The 2nr-ve (series 13 version) is a step back from the 2nr-fe (series 16 version)
of the NR engine family. Why toyota is doing this is for profitabilty. The consumer lose. (Again)

  9. This is the same engine in the Toyota Rush.

  10. Any word if the steering wheel is now finally aligned with the instrument cluster display?
