Wet Track Equalizes MSCC Miata Spec Series Field In Round 3

Despite the threat from Typhoon Paeng, Round 3 (Race 5 and 6) of the Manila Sports Car Club (MSCC) Miata Spec Series was business as usual at the Clark International Speedway last Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Torrential rains and an extremely wet and slippery track provided the excitement wherein Tyson Sy took the checkered flag in Race 5 with Juha Turalba and Angie King in second and third, respectively. In Race 6, Paul Henderson Perez took victory followed by Tyson Sy in second and Angie King in third.

“The wet race was the best so far, in my opinion,” shared Steven Tan, President of Mazda Philippines. “It was an equalizing factor that showed the courage and bravery from the novices who challenged the veterans using the most raced car in the world, the MX-5.”

Continuing rule changes that started in Round 2, the MSCC Miata Spec Series now has three classes: GT Radial Novice Class, the Shell Pro Class, and the Rota Masters Class. According to the MSCC, this reflects the diversity of the racing talent present, but also aims to nurture and develop up-and-coming race drivers in succeeding years.

Taxi rides in the race-prepped MX-5 further entertained guests from GT Radial and Pilipinas Shell.

The MSCC Miata Spec Series MX-5 uses a showroom stock 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine mated to a 6-speed Skyactiv manual transmission. In order to extract even more grip, the suspension components have been upgraded and reinforced with CUSCO sports coil overs and chassis braces.

A custom stainless steel exhaust system, developed by local company Drift Xaust, maximizes air flow and enhances the aggressive racing note emanating from the MX-5’s 181-horsepower mill. A Sparco competition steering wheel, racing seat, harness and safety net, along with a new CUSCO racing roll cage, are all installed in each car to secure the drivers’ control and safety. All Miata Spec Series cars come fitted with GT Radial Champiro SX2 tires mounted on custom 17 x 8.0 J Rota Strike wheels.

The MSCC Miata Spec Series is sponsored by Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, GT Radial tires, and Rota Wheels. The final round (Race 7 and 8) is slated on November 26, 2022 at the Clark International Speedway.
