2023 Ford Ranger Scores 5-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating

The next-generation Ford Ranger joins the Isuzu D-Max/Mazda BT-50 twins in getting a coveted perfect 5-star safety rating in the European New Car Assessment Program or Euro NCAP.

Considered as the one of toughest to ace globally among safety tests, the Euro NCAP has exacting standards, especially when it comes to larger commercial vehicles like the Ranger. Yet, the pickup truck managed an 84 percent Adult Occupant Protection rating, a 90 percent Child Occupant Protection rating, a 74 percent Vulnerable Road Users rating, and an 84 percent in Safety Assist Technology. All in all, this is enough for a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

Though Euro NCAP crash tested the Ranger’s structural twin, the Volkswagen Amarok, it derived the Ranger’s safety performance from its ANCAP (Australia New Car Assessment Program) tests to get the 5-star rating.

Given that the Ranger and the Everest share the same basic structure, this rating also applies to the next-generation Everest.

In terms of crash safety performance, Euro NCAP found that the Ranger’s passenger compartment remained stable with good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and front passenger. Better still, this level of protection is assured even if occupants were of different sizes and/or seated in different positions.

It also scored maximum points in terms of side-impact tests.

Having said that, Euro NCAP found the Ranger to be an “aggressive partner” in a frontal collision which results in points being docked. It also had marginal protection to the chest of rear passengers during a frontal impact and chest protection in the more severe side pole impact test.

In terms of Child Occupant Protection, the Ranger offered good protection in both frontal offset and side barrier tests allowing the Ranger to score maximum points in this part of the assessment.

Against Vulnerable Road Users such as cyclists and pedestrians, the Euro NCAP found mostly good or adequate protection save for the front edge of the hood. Nonetheless, the bumper provided good or adequate protection to pedestrians’ legs and pelvis in the event of a crash.

Better still, the Ranger’s Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system worked well per the Euro NCAP. Operational from 5 km/h, it managed to detect cyclists and pedestrians in most cases (the only scenario where it failed was when a pedestrian crossed a road which the Ranger is turning). Likewise, the AEB system reacted well to other vehicles.

    1. Ranger is a traditional body-on-frame pickup truck. It's a commercial vehicle through and through.

The Ford Maverick is a smaller unibody pickup that's based off the Bronco Sport/Escape platform. This one goes head-to-head against the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
