Mark your calendars: on January 13, 2023, Mazda’s famed rotary engine will be making a comeback. And as a fitting teaser, Mazda has unveiled the rotary’s modern logo.
Now, before you start conjuring up images of the RX-7 and RX-8, the rotary won’t be powering a sportscar nor will it power the drive wheels directly.
Instead, as part of Mazda’s multi-solution approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the rotary will act as a generator for the MX-30 EV’s all-electric powertrain.
Similar to Nissan’s e-Power—where a small displacement gas engine acts a generator to feed power to an on-board high-voltage battery—the rotary will act as a generator to extend the overall range of the MX-30’s lithium-ion battery. Upping one over Nissan, however, Mazda has opted to keep the plug effectively turning its first-ever EV into a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The rotary-powered MX-30 will join the MX-30 EV and the MX-30 Mild Hybrid on January 13, 2023 at its global unveil at the Brussels Motor Show. The European market will get the new powertrain option before June of this year with the rest of the world to follow.
