Mazda CX-60, Nissan Z Selected As World's Best Cars Of 2023


The countdown to awarding the best car of 2023 starts today with the announcement of the Top 10 finalists at the World Car Awards. The Top 5 finalists in seven categories have also been announced.

A jury of 100 distinguished international automotive journalists from 32 countries selected the finalists by secret ballot based on their evaluation of each eligible vehicle as part of their professional work.

The countdown ends on April 5 when the winners will be announced live at the 2023 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) during an awards ceremony.

The 2023 World Car of the Year will be selected from the following Top 10 finalists:
  • Alfa Romeo Tonale
  • BMW 2 Series Coupé
  • BMW X1 / iX1
  • Honda HR-V (North America) / ZR-V (Japan/China/ASEAN)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 6
  • Kia Niro
  • Mazda CX-60
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  • Nissan Ariya
  • Nissan Z
The Top Five finalists in the World Electric Vehicle category are:
  1. BMW i7
  2. Genesis GV60
  3. Hyundai Ioniq 6
  4. Kia Niro EV
  5. Lucid Air
The 2023 World Luxury Car class has the following Top Five finalists:
  1. BMW 7 Series / i7
  2. Genesis G90
  3. Land Rover Range Rover
  4. Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  5. Lucid Air
The 2023 World Performance Car Top Five Finalists are:
  1. BMW M4 CSL
  2. Kia EV6 GT
  3. Nissan Z
  4. Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS
  5. Toyota GR Corolla
There were three entries only in the 2023 World Urban Car class. As such the three candidates automatically become finalists. They are:
  1. Citroen C3
  2. ORA Funky Cat / Haomao
  3. Volkswagen Taigo / Nivus
All vehicles competing in the five categories above are eligible for the 2023 World Car Design of the Year award.

A design panel consisting of six highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors’ final vote. The design experts are, in alphabetical order: Ian Callum (United Kingdom – Director of Design, CALLUM), Gert Hildebrand (Germany – Owner Hildebrand-Design), Patrick le Quément (France - Designer and President of the Strategy Committee - The Sustainable Design School), Tom Matano (USA – Academy of Art University, Former Head of Design – Mazda), Victor Nacif (USA - Chief Creative Officer, Brojure.com and Design instructor, NewSchool of Architecture and Design) and Shiro Nakamura (Japan - CEO, Shiro Nakamura Design Associates Inc.).

The five finalists chosen by the design panel for the jurors’ final vote are in alphabetical order:
  1. Cadillac Lyriq
  2. Hyundai Ioniq 6
  3. Land Rover Range Rover
  4. Lucid Air
  5. Nissan Z
