Volvo To Launch Geely-Based Luxury MPV To Rival Lexus LM

Volvo is gearing up to launch three all-electric SUVs, two all-electric sedans, and one all-electric MPV by 2030 with the help of parent company, Geely.

Reported by Reuters, the Swedish carmaker will undergo its largest model line-up revamp since being acquired by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group from Ford in 2010. It’s understood that the all-electric blitz is aimed at boosting sales in Asia—a move that’s proven to be successful for several of their competitors. The new EVs will utilize technologies such as car platforms shared with Geely.

Most of the new electrified models are Volvo mainstays such as the XC60 and XC40 (likely to be rebadged as EX60 and EX40) as well as the S60 and S90. But the most interesting addition would be a luxury MPV based on the Zeekr 009 (see accompanying photos).

The Zeekr 009 rides on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture or SEA and comes with outputs up to 536 horsepower and 686 Nm of torque in the dual-motor, all-wheel drive version. According to the brand, the 0 to 100 km/h sprint comes in just 4.5 seconds.

Battery sizes are either 116 kWh or a hulking 140 kWh claimed to offer up to 822 kilometers of driving range.

With a starting price of around RMB 500,000 (P 4 million), the 5.2-meter long van competes against the likes of the Toyota Alphard; this makes its Volvo equivalent, a competitor to the Lexus LM.

To prepare for barrage of BEVs, Volvo has reportedly moved development work on sedans and the coming MPV model to its Shanghai research and development hub.

The new line of Volvo BEVs will follow the brand’s “established, simple design cues,” but the luxury MPV will have a decidedly more “emotional” design as it targets primarily Chinese buyers.

The first of Volvo’s new planned electric models, the EX90 battery-electric SUV, was unveiled late last year. It is expected to go on sale in early 2024.
