Kia Brings Fresh Thinking And Tech To Three-Row SUVs With First-Ever EV9

Kia’s follow-up to its award-winning EV6 is this: the first-ever EV9. Its first three-row fully electric SUV brings fresh thinking, design, and technology to the segment while also spearheading the brand’s transformation to a sustainability mobility solutions provider in the electrified era.

Also riding on the E-GMP or Electric Global Modular Platform, the EV9 packs Kia’s fourth-generation battery technology. The Rear Wheel Drive Standard model has a 76.1-kWh battery, while a 99.8-kWh battery is fitted to both the Rear Wheel Drive Long Range and All Wheel Drive variants. Its longest cruising range is pegged at over 540 kilometers, while an ultra-fast 800-volt charging capacity replenishes the battery pack to provide 239 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.

The standard engine, fitted to the RWD Long Range model is a 204 horsepower, 350 Nm of torque single electric motor giving this large SUV the ability to sprint to 100 km/h in just 9.4 seconds. Opting for the standard range model ups the outputs to 217 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, while dropping the sprint time to 8.2 seconds.

The AWD variant, meanwhile, has dual motors delivering 384 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque. 0 to 100 km/h is done in just 6 seconds. Additional performance can be unlocked via an optional Boost feature pushing the combined torque to 700 Nm. 0 to 100 km/h? 5.3 seconds.

Guided by Kia’s “Opposites United” philosophy, the EV9 combines elements from both natural and material worlds to create a boxy, yet elegant design that exudes sophistication and sensual calmness. Its 3,100 mm wheelbase is more pickup truck than standard SUV, while wheel sizes range from 19 to 21-inch wheels. Its overall length stands at 5,010 mm, while its width is at 1,980 mm, and its height is at 1,755 mm.

Despite its size, the EV9 delivers impressive aerodynamic qualities with a drag co-efficient of just 0.28. This is thanks to a 3D-sculpted underbody cover, aerodynamic wheels, and air curtains integrated into the front bumper.

The Kia EV9 offers six- and seven-seater configurations. Like the EV6, the first-row has Relaxation Seats that ensure a comfortable resting posture. But, for the first time ever in an EV, Kia is offering four seating options for the second row—3-seater bench seats, basic-type, relaxation-type, and swivel-type two-seater independent seats—fully utilizing its bespoke platform.

When equipped with the second-row relaxation seats, the EV9 allows first and second-row occupants to recline together while the SUV is charging. With the swivel seat option, the second-row seats swivel 180 degrees to enable conversations with those seated in the third row. Occupants in the third row are provided with charging points and cup holders.

The Kia EV9 also has unlockable Level 3 autonomous driving capability thanks to its Highway Driving Pilot or HDP system. Fifteen sensors, including two lidars, enable it to scan for and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view, enabling it to detect and react to the road and other users to prevent potential collisions.

It also has a wide array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems including Remote Smart Parking Assist that enables the EV9 to park itself without the need for driver intervention. It can even do so without the driver or any passenger on-board.

The Kia EV9 is set to make its inaugural physical debut at the Seoul Mobility Show 2023 starting tomorrow. It will then be showcased at this year’s New York International Auto Show in early April. Pre-orders for the all-new EV9 starts for the Korean market in the second quarter of this year with other global markets getting the all-new SUV by the second half.
