Ford Receives Approval To Sell Bronco For International Markets

Sad about the discontinuation of the Toyota FJ Cruiser? Not to worry, another retro-styled, body-on-frame SUV may soon be on the way locally: the Ford Bronco.

After working to homologate it for international markets, Ford has finally received the go-signal to sell it in two trims: the Bronco Outer Banks and the Bronco Badlands. In both variants, it’s powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6—an engine that already received a regulatory approval in the Philippines. This engine produces 335 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and 563 Nm at 3,100 rpm. The transmission is a 10-speed automatic.

The Bronco is built on a platform shared with the Everest/Ranger but has been stiffened with seven crossmembers. The High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) features long-travel independent wishbones at the front, and a solid five-link rear axle with long travel springs. Its suspension travel is rated at up to 259 mm.

The Bronco Badlands also has Bilstein dampers. With position-sensitive external reservoirs, it provides additional cooling under severe conditions, while the damping force automatically increases at the extremes of suspension travel.

Furthermore, the Bronco Outer Banks and the Bronco Badlands is differentiated by its four-wheel drive system. The former has a two-speed electronic transfer case, while the latter adds a front locking differential and anti-roll disconnect system for maximum articulation over challenging terrain.

Compared to its North American counterpart, the export version of the Bronco features a revised front profile due to different pedestrian safety rules. Still, it will carry its impactful design down to its short overhangs and bold, functional lines. The full-width grille and circular headlights hark back to its roots, but remain fully functional giving the off-roader a clear sight of any trail ahead.

Inside, the internal market Bronco as an 8-inch partial TFT display, a 12-inch LCD center touchscreen with SYNC 4, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a B&O Premium Sound system with 10 speakers. Standard is a 360-degree camera.

So far, Ford Philippines has yet to make any official announcement about the Bronco, but if it does, it may arrive “in limited qualities.” Like all other Broncos, it will be sourced from Wayne, Michigan. Possible pricing is also a closely guarded secret. That said, expect Ford to undercut parallel imports which have been selling the Bronco Badlands for as much as P 7 million.
