Cigarette Maker PMFTC Goes All-Electric For Smoke-Free Future

It sounds a bit ironic for a cigarette maker, but PMFTC, an affiliate of Philip Morris International, is envisioning a smoke-free future by going all-electric for its Marikina Sales Office. PMFTC’s move is seen as a significant step towards the company’s goal of Carbon Neutrality by 2025 while also aiming to maintain profitability.

Like DHL Express Philippines, PMFTC has chosen the BYD T3 electric compact van. Running on BYD’s proprietary 50.3 kWh Blade Battery system (lithium iron-phosphate battery), it can travel up to 250 kilometers on a single charge. A full charge is done in just one hour using a fast charger or up to 8 hours using a household socket. The T3’s electric motor delivers 136 horsepower (100 kW) and 180 Nm of torque, enough for a zero to 100 km/h time of 9.9 seconds—faster than most other pickup trucks.

The T3 is also outfitted with features such as dual SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, four-wheel disc brakes, and rear parking sensors.

PMFTC acquired 10 units of the BYD T3 compact delivery van.

BYD is exclusively distributed by Solar Transport and Automotive Resources Corporation in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) supports PMFTC’s Smoke-Free Future initiative, applauding the company for taking significant steps towards achieving a cleaner and healthier future for all. “The move towards electric vehicles is an excellent step towards creating a cleaner and more sustainable environment, which is critical for the long-term growth and sustainability of the Philippines.” Says Edmund Araga President of EVAP.

“Moreover, the shift towards electric vehicles will bring significant benefits to PMFTC, including cost savings on fuel and maintenance, as well as improved efficiency and reduced downtime. This move sets an example for other companies to follow, as it demonstrates that it is possible to achieve profitability while contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment,” he adds.

EVAP Chairman Rommel Juan wants to encourage other companies to follow suit. “We enjoin other companies to follow PMFTC’s initiative and also change their vehicle fleet into EVs,” says Juan.
