Geely Okavango Scores 5-Star ASEAN NCAP Rating. But There's A Catch

The Geely Okavango joins the Coolray in scoring the highest possible rating at the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program or ASEAN NCAP. But there’s a catch.

The 7-seater mild-hybrid SUV, tested as the Proton X90 scored 83.75 out of 100, enough for a 5-star rating but only when equipped with the optional Advanced Driver Assist System or ADAS. Aside from ADAS, the model tested comes with 6 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, stability control, and blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert.

Unfortunately for Filipino buyers, aside from the full suite of airbags, ABS with EBD, and stability control, the local Okavango doesn’t come with any sort of ADAS or even blind spot monitoring.

Broken down, the Okavango scored 37.75 out of 40 in Adult Occupant Protection, 17.79 out of 20 in Child Occupant Protection, 15.71 out of 20 in Safety Assist Technology, and 12.50 out of 20 in Motorcycle Safety Technology.

Without ADAS, the Okavango’s score would drop down to a 4-star ASEAN NCAP rating based on the 2021-2025 testing protocol.

Still, the Okavango generally showed excellent crash safety performance with all areas bar the driver’s chest and driver’s left leg showing a “Good” rating (the driver’s chest and left leg protection showed an “Adequate” level of protection). The ASEAN NCAP notes that the occupant compartment remained stable.

Meanwhile, all other technologies including the ADAS and blind spot monitoring worked as intended.
