Is This The "Final Form" Of The Fourth-Generation Mazda MX-5?

Mazda continues its pursuit of sportscar perfection with the significantly updated 2024 MX-5. Set for a global release starting in mid-January 2024, the refreshed fourth-generation “ND” model gets safety, handling, and connectivity updates. It could very well be the final major update current roadster since a full model change is expected by 2025 to 2026.

Headlining the changes to the 2024 MX-5 is the newly-developed Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential system. A cam mechanism has been added to the conical clutch LSD. The cam angle is set differently for the deceleration side and acceleration side, thereby achieving optimal limiting force of slip during both processes.

In addition, the Dynamic Stability Control system now adds DSC-TRACK mode (manual transmission models only) which only intervenes when the driver is unable to control a spin behavior, typically when the car oversteers.

Together with these new handling changes, the 2024 MX-5 also gets a lighter, more accurate tuning of its electric power steering system. This has been done by reducing the steering rack friction and improving the motor assist control.

In terms of powerplants, the refreshed MX-5 retains the 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G and 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engines. The small engine gets a minor power bump (4 horsepower), while the larger motor retains its 181 horsepower (184 PS) and 205 Nm outputs. Changes to the throttle pedal calibration (MT models only), however, reduces delay.

In terms of safety, the 2024 MX-5 now adds Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) and rear Smart Brake Support (SBS-RC) to its suite of i-Activ driver assist technology.

Communicating the changes, the 2024 MX-5 gets revised LED headlights and taillights. All other lamps such as the reverse lamps and turn signal lamps are now LED as well. The 17-inch alloy wheels also get a new design with straight spokes, while Aero Gray Metallic arrives as an additional colorway (other colors are: Snowflake White Pearl Mica, Zircon Sand Metallic, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Soul Red Crystal Metallic, Machine Grey Metallic, and Jet Black Mica). Inside, the latest version of Mazda Connect makes its debut in the MX-5. The 8.8-inch screen uses a frameless design making it as narrow as possible as not to interfere with front visibility.

For the Japanese market, the MX-5 is also available with a new sports tan Nappa leather interior and a beige top.

Officially, Mazda Philippines hasn’t announced the arrival of the updated MX-5 just yet, but since they’ve closed the order books on the limited-run MX-5 25th Anniversary MCP edition earlier than expected, it’s likely that the country will see what could be the last major update of the ND by early 2024.
