Must Love Dogs: Driving To Pawssion Project In Bulacan

Humans can be despicable at times. Just when you thought their cruelty would extend only to spreading hate and vitriol to fellow man, you hear of stories of animal cruelty from Pawssion Project’s founder Malou Perez. It’s difficult, even for the most hardened person, not to get winded up after hearing how dogs (and cats) were abandoned by their family just because they were just “too much trouble” or that they “weren’t fun anymore.”

I could give you some of the stories here, but that’s not the point of this story. I’ll let the afterlife be the judge of them.

Instead, let me open with the inspiring story of Malou who founded Pawssion Project in October 2018. The marketer, who was supposed to open an AirBNB business in Bacolod turned it instead into a shelter for dogs (and then cats) when she found out that unwanted or unclaimed dogs at their local pound aren’t euthanized; they’re killed by gunshot all because bullets are more economical.

She found her calling and setup this non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of abused dogs and cats. Armed with a lot of hope, courage, and the support of a few good friends, she organized that first pound rescue. As the number of animals needing help increased, she then opened a second shelter in Bulacan in the middle of 2019.

Malou’s journey has been a hard one. Some questioned why she decided to focus on animals when there are people out there who’re in need of food or shelter. Some nefarious individuals, particularly breeders, issued death threats all because they thought her “Adopt, Don’t Shop” thrust was threatening their business. These haven’t waivered her cause one bit. She explains that there are more organizations out there focused on helping indigent groups, but there’s a lack of support for the 15 million or so stray dogs on the streets. Through her ups and downs, her journey has led Pawssion Project to more than 2,000 rescues, and over 1,000 rehomed animals.

Now, you’re probably wondering: what do dogs and cats have anything to do with cars? This eye-opening experience was organized by Honda Cars Philippines. Although tree planting or house building may have been the typical CSR activity, they’ve decided to raise awareness to the plight of abused and neglected animals in the country. Plus, it a break from the usual wine-and-dine drives other carmakers have done in the past. At least this one has heart and lots of fur.

I’ve heard about Pawssion Project in the past, but didn’t know that if you can’t adopt or donate, they also accept volunteer work as well. Malou explains that play time with these dogs and cats helps in their rehabilitation and socialization. Plus, getting to and from Pawssion Project is quite easy and is something doable even if you’re in an urban car like a Brio or City. You’ll find all the information that you need below if you ever want to donate your time.

So next time you’re considering to do a club-related activity (or even a funrun outreach), you may want to consider heading over to Pawssion Project. Remember, a small act of kindness goes a long way.
