Subaru, Aisin To Co-Develop eAxles

Subaru and Aisin will jointly develop and share production of eAxles for its next-generation battery electric vehicles due in showrooms by the latter half of the 2020s.

The eAxle drive unit integrates the main components necessary to propel a vehicle that uses an electric motor as its main power source, such as BEVs, into an axle structure. It mainly consists of a gearbox, a motor, and an inverter.

The development will center around three concepts: high efficiency, lightweight, and compactness.

In addition, Subaru and Aisin will study optimal parts suppliers and production schemes, taking into consideration the maintenance and development of the existing supply chain.

Subaru has established a roadmap towards 2050 with the goal of becoming a carbon neutral company through initiatives such as electrification. It’s the same goal that Aisin wants to achieve by advancing initiatives in terms of production and products.
