Mercedes-Benz Previews Tacky New Design Language

When was the last time you considered a Mercedes-Benz design to be elegantly timeless? If it was under the direction of Bruno Sacco, Mercedes-Benz’s chief of design from 1975 to 1999, then you’re in the vast majority. Since then, the three-pointed star hasn’t really found their aesthetic footing and judging by the upcoming all-new GLC, they’ll be tripping on themselves altogether.

Eschewing the poorly-received EQ design language helmed by current design guru Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz is now looking at its most iconic design feature to help them move forward: the grille.

The upright chrome grille has been a central feature of nearly every Mercedes-Benz model and for the all-new, all-electric GLC (GLC with EQ Technology if you want to use the brand’s naming), they’re modernizing it with a wide chrome frame, a smoked-glass-effect lattice structure, and integrated contour lighting.

An illuminated version, which literally outshines BMW’s Iconic Glow, will have 942 backlit dots. And to charm influencers and supercar blondies out there, it’ll even be animated! Additionally, the central Mercedes-Benz star and integrated surrounding contour of the panel are also illuminated. Talk about tacky.

The GLC with EQ Technology, which will hold its global debut this September, will not only showcase the brand’s evolved Sensual Purity design, but it will also mark the introduction of a new in-car OS: the MB.OS. Promising “supercomputer” capabilities, the MB.OS will power the MBUX Hyperscreen (yup, Mercedes-Benz is doubling down on giant screens) that’ll “elevate the interior in a way never seen before.” Sure.
