Ford To Tear Down The Glass House, Its Iconic World Headquarters

Ford is bidding goodbye to its historic World Headquarters, colloquiality known as the “Glass House” in Dearborn, Michigan. In its place, the carmaker will be moving to a new site just five kilometers away.

The new Ford World Headquarters only has four floors, but its floor plan measures a massive 195,096 square meters. This will fit up to 4,000 people—twice that of the Glass House.

Made of glass, concrete, natural stone, and natural wood, the new Ford World Headquarters is scheduled to be completed by 2027. However, employees will be able to move in as early as this November.

The new building will have six design studios, a design showroom with 10 turntables, 300 tech-enabled meeting rooms, large event spaces, a 14,864-square meter food hall accessible to all Ford employees, wellness rooms, kitchenettes, mothers’ rooms.

It’s also designed to be a net-zero energy usage facility. New water-saving and waste reduction strategies include a new central energy plant that supplies hot water and steam, and it is also located within walking distance of the 14,000 employees at Ford's Research and Engineering and Trackside testing operations facilities. This is on top of 48,562 square meters of greenspace and 9,290 square meters of interior courtyard space.

The Ford World Headquarters is situated on the site of the former Ford Product Development Center, which opened in 1953. It’s part of a larger campus, the Ford Dearborn campus, which will be renamed the Henry Ford II World Center.

The “Glass House” will be torn down in 18 months and the site itself will be repurposed. Ford says they will be working with the city of Dearborn on plans for the site which may include open spaces or parks.

When it opened in 1956, the Glass House was the one of the largest office buildings occupied by a single company.
