Honda Is Ready To Democratize Its EVs At The Japan Mobility Show

Honda has confirmed that it will be showcasing two new EV prototype models at this year’s Japan Mobility Show.

In Honda parlance, “prototype” signifies a model that’s taken one step closer to production. It wears a close-to-production-ready exterior design. Its interior design may still be under development, while its mechanical aspects are still under wraps. A recent example is the Prelude which Honda has brought from the concept to prototype to production stages in a span of around two years.

At this year’s Japan Mobility Show, Honda is showing off the next member of its Honda 0 Series model—the third after the Honda 0 Series Sedan and Honda 0 Series SUV. As mentioned by the carmaker before, the third member of the Honda 0 Series will be an entry-level SUV which will see production in 2026.

This announcement will undoubtedly help launch a more democratized Honda BEV line-up which has so far been limited to models like the Honda e:N1.

Aside from this new Honda 0 Series model, the carmaker will also show off a new Compact EV prototype.

Details are scarce as of the moment, but they did confirm that this model will be “developed in pursuit of the ‘fun of driving’ unique only to Honda.” In addition, they have said that it’s undergoing road testing in countries with strong compact EV demand—specifically saying Japan, the U.K., and Asian countries.

This could point to an export/global version of Honda’s N-One e: kei-car. Just recently launched in Japan, the N-One e: is designed to be small on the outside, but big on the inside—adhering to Honda’s man maximum, machine minimum concept. The N-One e: has easy handling and a tight turning radius with a low center of gravity thanks to the battery being mounted under the floor.

Speaking of the battery, the N-One e: has a 295-kilometer range thanks to a 29.6-kWh lithium-ion battery. This thermally controlled battery charges up in just 4.5 hours (Level 2 charging) and 30 minutes using DC fast charging. It offers conveniences such as one-pedal driving too.

These two new Honda BEV prototypes will join other Japan Mobility Show highlights including the sustainable rocket, the all-new Prelude, and of course, the Honda N-One e.
