Honda Partially Sells Its Aoyama Global Office

Honda is changing its plans surrounding its head office. Citing the continued rapid transformation of the automotive industry, the carmaker won’t be fully utilizing its planned new Aoyama Building anymore. Instead, they’re moving to an office space in Yaesu near Tokyo Station by 2029.

The decision comes after the carmaker temporarily moved its head office functions to Toranomon in May. There, the company adopted a “one-floor” style of office layout, with associates working in one space on one floor, instead of spread across multiple floors. This arrangement evidently strengthened connections among associates and facilitated in more engaging discussions.

Considering these factors, Honda reconsidered the optimal office conditions for its new global head office, and concluded that it’s best to relocate its head office to the Yaesu District Redevelopment Area. Once it relocates there, the size of each floor area will be around 6.8 times larger than that of the Aoyama Building and approximately 1.8 times larger than the one in Toranomon.

Aside from a better working environment, Yaesu also holds a special significance to Honda as it was its first operations base in Tokyo. It served as the global headquarters from 1960 to 1974.

Regarding its planned Aoyama Building (which also housed the Honda Welcome Aoyama prior to its redevelopment plan), Honda will transfer a portion of its ownership of the building and land to Mitsui Fudosan Residential. This is after Honda decided with its plans to reconstruct the Aoyama Building in September 2023.

Following the partial transfer, Honda and Mitsui Fudosan Residential will jointly construct a new building on the site of Aoyama Bldg. Once completed, Honda is planning to make use of part of the new building, and will explore a range of ideas and opportunities to make it a venue to further enhance Honda brand value.

The Aoyama Building will be completed before March 31, 2031.
