Surprise! Lexus Updates The IS Sports Sedan For 2026

Who said that the Lexus IS is going away? The carmaker made a surprise announcement by showing off a refreshed version of its rear-wheel drive sports sedan.

For 2026, Lexus is keeping two powertrains—the IS 350 and the IS 300h. The 3.5-liter 2GR-FKS V6 is still the range-topping engine in the IS 350. Mated to an 8-speed automatic, it produces some 315 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque. An all-wheel drive version is retained but that one has six forward gears instead. Meanwhile, in the IS 300h, it has a 2.5-liter electrified 4-cylinder (2AR-FSE) putting out 221 horsepower combined. This one uses an E-CVT.

Regardless of powertrain, the Lexus IS receives a recalibrated electric power steering system with a new parallel rack gear (Variable Gear Ratio) and low inertia motor. This should deliver a more linear and smoother steering feel regardless of driving situations.

This goes together with an updated Adaptive Variable Suspension. By replacing the conventional step-type actuator with a newly developed built-in solenoid actuator, the AVS enhances the damping force response by four times. This helps it achieve flatter sprung-mass behavior and reduced shock from road surface inputs.

Outside, the 2026 Lexus IS is 10 mm longer (4,720 mm), while retaining its width (1,840 mm) and height (1,435 mm for the IS 350 RWD and IS 300h, and 1,440 mm for the IS 350 AWD). The added length is due largely to its revised front fascia with a low-set spindle grille with integrated brake ducts. At the back, the Lexus logo has been replaced with the LEXUS script. The F Sport variant, meanwhile features a new rear spoiler that enhances rear downforce. All alloy wheels—from the base 18s to the top-of-the-line forged 19s on the IS 350 F Sport have been updated as well.

A total of eight colors are available, including a new shade: Neutrino Gray.

Inside, the Lexus IS takes on the Tazuna Concept wherein the ergonomics enable for intuitive operation and control. For 2026, it receives a new 12.3-inch touchscreen center display which is angled to the driver, while still not obstructing the line of sight. This goes together with a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with easy-to-read graphics and more personalization. Other changes include new USB Type C inputs front and back, a wireless charger, and ambient lighting with 14 preset color combinations.

The focal point in the interior is the new Forged Bamboo material—the first Lexus model to receive this innovative interior material. Replacing the traditional piano black, carbon fiber, or even wood inlays, this distinctive Inei shading is created by woven bamboo fibers embedded into the panel itself.

A new interior color—Prominence—is also added to the F Sport variant as well. This vivid, high-saturation hue further enhances the Lexus IS’s aggressive and sporty character.

In terms of safety, the Lexus Safety System has been expanded to include Proactive Driving Assist. This system anticipates potential risks based on the driving situation. For example, it assists with deceleration when approaching curves or if it detects a vehicle ahead. It even offers continuous steering support while driving within a lane.

The Pre-Collision System has also been expanded to offer cyclist detection at night, motorcycles during the day, and intersection collision avoidance for oncoming vehicles. The detection range has also been expanded compared to before, like the Radar Cruise Control. The Radar Cruise Control even adds voice control to set its following distance and cruising speed.

The new 2026 Lexus IS will be available in various markets starting in early 2026.

  1. It may have old bones but it still looks very attractive. Plus a compact sedan with naturally aspirated V6 very rare combo nowadays

  4. If I have the money to buy this, I will immediately remove that front in favor of the old one.
