Everyone’s worst fears have been realized as Mercedes-Benz unveiled the all-new, all-electric GLC (officially called the GLC with EQ Technology). After showing off its hideous front grille and tacky interior, the German automaker has finally pulled the curtains off its premium compact SUV. And, sorry, it’s not that impressive.
Starting with the exterior design, Mercedes-Benz has given the GLC an illuminated grille set upon an SUV that’s quite generic. The same could be said with the interior which relies on the gigantic MBUX Hyperscreen. At 39.1 inches in size, it’s the largest screen ever fitted into a Mercedes-Benz vehicle to date. This screen can be styled in 11 different ways with the use of color in the instrument cluster, control elements, and ambient lighting all coordinated.
The car itself is powered by an AI-driven MB.OS “superbrain” (the same terminology used by rival BMW on its iX3). This means that every aspect of the GLC with EQ Technology (we’ll call it GLC EQ for short)—from infotainment to automated driving to charging is controlled by this system. The MB.OS leverages powerful chips enabling it to handle complex calculations and tasks like the human brain. It will also think, learn, and evolve with the driver. And because it’s connected to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud it enables continuous updates, all while ensuring top-notch data protection.
Instead of physical switches and knobs, the GLC EQ will heavily leverage on voice control, integrating tools from both Microsoft and Google. The MBUX Virtual Assistant can select the best source for each task, even within the same conversation. Mercedes-Benz says that using the system is like “chatting with a friend” since it provides detailed responses and can answer follow-up questions without the need to repeat context. The infotainment offering for the front passenger includes over 40 apps, video streaming and direct access to Disney+.
Two key options have been confirmed by Mercedes-Benz. One is Sky Control—a panoramic roof that can switch between glass and ambient lighting with 162 “stars” in the night sky. Second is the Vegan Package. This means that the interior soft-touch material as been certified animal-free by The Vegan Society.
Regardless of option, the GLC comes standard with a more spacious interior. With a wheelbase that’s 84 mm longer compared to the combustion GLC, passengers can enjoy an exceptionally roomy and comfortable ride. The result is 13 mm more legroom and 46 mm more headroom up front, while rear passengers benefit from 47 mm more legroom and 17 mm more headroom. For those requiring ample storage space, the GLC has it covered. The rear cargo hold has 570 liters of capacity, (1,740 liters with the rear seats down). Additionally, the frunk (front trunk) contributes an extra 128 liters of load capacity and can be opened partially electrically via touch control.
At launch, the GLC EQ will come with as the GLC 400 4Matic that offers 489 horsepower (360 kW) and 713 kilometers of range thanks to a 94 kWh of usable content from its lithium-ion battery. Four further powertrain configurations will follow.
Using an 800-volt system, the GLC EQ can recharge a range of up to 303 kilometers in just 10 minutes. A country-specific DC converter is installed on a country-specific basis enabling it to fast charge at 400-volt charging stations.
The GLC 400 4matic features Terrain Mode as a driving program for field or gravel roads, adjusting the characteristics of the drive, steering and brakes. The “transparent bonnet” function enables a virtual view under the front of the vehicle by combining images from the front camera and the exterior mirror cameras.
Meanwhile, there’s the One-Box braking system. Which has the GLC EQ calculating the maximum energy recuperation and the minimum use of the friction brakes. In everyday driving, the all-new GLC generates electricity during braking in over 99 percent of cases, says Mercedes-Benz.
The MB.Drive systems in the all-new GLC also takes advantage of up to ten external cameras, five radar sensors and twelve ultrasonic sensors to offer first-class advanced driver assistance. And with intelligent air suspension familiar from the S-Class, the all-new GLC guarantees supreme ride comfort. This combines with 4.5-degree rear-axle steering for exceptional agility.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology heads to showroom in the first half of 2026.
