Changan PH Adding Hunter Plus Diesel Pickup Truck To Local Line-Up

Yet more clear signs that Changan Philippines can’t seem to figure out its product strategy, the Chinese car brand, exclusively distributed by Inchcape, is bringing in a diesel-powered version of its Hunter pickup truck to add to their line-up.

While the Hunter is currently available as a REEV (range extended electric vehicle) pickup truck, in both 4x2 and 4x4 guise, if we may add, it’s not exactly lighting the sales tally on fire. However, instead of sticking to a segment where it and the BYD Shark 6 DMO are the only ones doing battle, Changan has decided to head straight into a territory dominated by legacy car brands: diesel-fed pickup trucks.

Its LTO homologation papers have already been approved and it shows the Hunter Plus being made available in both 4x2 and 4x4 variants. The paperwork shows that the Hunter Plus measures in at 5,350 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, and 1,875 mm in height. It sports a 3,180 mm wheelbase and a ground clearance of 225 mm.

Both variants appear to show a 2.5-liter (2,499 cc) turbo diesel with a 160 km/h listed top speed. Although not mentioned, it could mean a Jiangxi Isuzu-sourced engine producing 125 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. Overseas, this can be mated to a 6-speed manual and while it’s not available with the 2.5-liter, an 8-speed automatic option can be matched to the 2.0-liter diesel.

Although its homologation paperwork is limited to just its basic tech specs, a tipster sent photos of the Changan Hunter Plus at Changan C5. From here, it’s clear that the local spec Hunter Plus will have a very different design to the Hunter REEV. Confirmed by the photos include 18-inch wheels, projector-type headlights (likely lit by LEDs), black fender flares, a rear sports bar, and parking sensors. Possible interior specs include faux leather seats, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 7.5-inch LCD infotainment screen.

Now, the big question: the price. With the Changan Hunter Plus now eyeing to go against the likes of the JAC Grand Avenue, GWM Cannon, and the upcoming MG TRQ, it could be priced at around P 1.3-million to P 1.6-million.

Hat tip to JM.

    1. Strict diesel emissions standards in China dumbed down the power and torque of their domestic pickup trucks.
This diesel engine is reliable as it's developed and manufactured by Isuzu and VM Motori
