Toyota Just Shrunk The Tamaraw To Transform It Into A Lifestyle-Oriented Truck

Roughly two years since its introduction as the Hilux Champ in Thailand, Toyota has unveiled a third wheelbase option for the next-generation Tamaraw. Dubbed the “Super Short Wheelbase” or Super SWB, it’s designed to be the most maneuverable version of the IMV-0 model yet that doesn’t compromise on cargo capacity.

Measuring in at 4,520 mm in length, 1,785 mm in width, and 1,735 mm in height, the Hilux Champ (aka Tamaraw) Super SWB is a full 450 mm shorter than the Tamaraw SWB model. Its wheelbase—at 2,580 mm—is 170 mm shorter, while the bed itself has been cut by 445 mm.

These changes means that the Tamaraw Super SWB is more agile with a smaller turning radius—4.7 meters versus 4.9 meters for the Tamaraw SWB. It also rides slightly higher—166.5 mm (up 2.5 mm)—compared to the Tamaraw SWB and even the Tamaraw LWB variants.

Positioned more as a lifestyle-oriented model than the Tamaraw SWB and LWB variants, the Tamaraw Super SWB packs a 2GD-FTV engine mated to a 6-speed automatic with sequential shift. Equipped with Variable Nozzle Turbocharger, it makes 150 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,000 rpm—the same numbers as the Tamaraw diesel variants. It does, however, have a larger 63-liter fuel tank.

Apart from LED headlights, 14-inch wheels, and the black cladding, the Tamaraw Super SWB gets a standard rear-opening tailgate. This is opposed to the drop side design found in the Tamaraw SWB and LWB variants. And despite this change, the Tamaraw Super SWB manages to have a larger bed capacity than the Hilux double cab—1,867 x 1,711 x 327 mm versus 1,555 x 1,540 x 480 mm.

Exterior features include LED headlights and 14-inch wheels, while inside, it has decorative orange stripes, easy-to-clean PVC seats that adjust for recline, and a two-speaker system. Of course, like all Tamaraw variants, this one’s purely a two-seater.

Here comes the most curious part: the pricing. The Super SWB “Attractive Package” is actually the most expensive Hilux Champ variant in Thailand. Now, since Toyota Motor Philippines is already offering a similarly-speced SWB variant in the Tamaraw 2.4 GL Dropside (P 1,075,000), it’s likely that, if this Super SWB will be offered here, it’ll be priced around P 1.1-million making it slightly more expensive than the Hilux 2.4 J 4x2.

Do you think Toyota should offer the Tamaraw Super SWB in the Philippines?

  1. This is the precursor to the upcoming Land Cruiser FJ, as that will use the same platform as this Super SWB Hilux Champ. The Land Cruiser FJ will qualify as a PPV in Thailand, which has less tax compared to normal passenger cars.

  2. Yung existing tamaraw hindi pantay ang gulong sa harap at likod. Pano kaya alignment nun? Eto ganun din kaya?

  3. Imagine if they made this a 4x4. Man this would be a good off roader too. Kaso yung inaantay ko talaga is yung SUV body type gaya nung sa Indonesia. Yung parang FJ ang itsura
