BYD Is Now The World's Best-Selling EV Brand

BYD is now the world’s top EV brand, overtaking Tesla in full-year 2025 sales. This is based on sales data released by the two automakers.

The Chinese New Energy Vehicle brand reported that it had sold 2.26 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs)—up nearly 28 percent from 2024. Meanwhile, the Elon Musk-led carmaker reported sales of 1.6 million, a decline of 8.6 percent. This marks Tesla’s second straight year of sales declines and its biggest annual drop in its history.

In the fourth quarter, Tesla’s sales came in at about 418,227, down 15.6 percent from a year earlier and an even sharper decline from global sales in the third quarter.

Despite its excellent full year 2025 performance, BYD also experienced its slowest sales growth in five years, due to fierce competition in its home market, China. With more than 50 EV makers, rivals such as Geely, Xiaomi, and Leapmotor have gradually eroded BYD’s domestic market share.

From a peak of 35 percent in 2023, BYD’s market share fell to 29 percent in the first 11 months of 2025, according to China Passenger Car Association. In the same period last year, its sales declined more than 5 percent, while Geely’s surged nearly 90 percent.

Together with relentless price wars in its home market, the Shenzhen-based company had to expand overseas especially in Latin America, South East Asia, and parts of Europe.

BYD said sales outside of China climbed to a record 1 million vehicles in 2025, up about 150 percent from 2024. The company has said it aimed to sell as many as 1.6 million vehicles outside China in 2026, though it has not disclosed an overall sales target.

However, its cheap price and fear of selling “zero-mileage cars” abroard has led to many countries now imposing steep tariffs on Chinese EVs.

And despite BYD surpassing Tesla when it comes to car sales, the Tesla has remained more profitable in recent quarters.

  1. Trump stop the 7.5k$ subsidy to EV's and he also ditched elong mask. Meanwhile china has very big subsidies and tax incentives on NEV's.

  2. Being ni. 1 in sales doesnt mean they have the best EV's. Example is tesla, now not no. 1 but has miles better quality and drive better than the low quality engineered byd

    1. Are you completely unaware of how much Teslas need to be serviced because of issues? Newer models have seen improvements but the history of reliability issues can't just be forgotten.

    2. Tesla EVs are unreliable..Watch YouTube videos about broken and unreliable Tesla EVs.
BYD EVs are reliable and more affordable.

If you prefer not to watch youtubers talk about it you then you can read actual business analysis from websites like businessinsider or Bloomberg. Just google "Hertz Tesla story" and their articles should be the top results. They talk about Tesla reliability being an issue.

And there's no need to attack people like talking about their maturity. No one was being personal with you. ๐Ÿคจ

    6. There's nothing prestigious about Tesla as its the Ford of EVs.
If you want real prestigious car manufacturer then go for Mercedes Benz,Ferrari or Lamborghini.
BYD never said that their a prestigious car manufacturer as they're as mass market vehicle manufacturer

    1. pwede but right now Geely Ex2 na best selling EV

    2. Unlikely to happen as Xiaomi doesn't sell a very affordable mass market small EV.
Geely is slowly catching up BYD because of the best selling EX2 EV which defeated BYD Seagull in sales since last year.

  4. Tesla still refuse to add more new smaller and affordable EVs in its vehicle lineup
Cybertruck's sales are massively low while Tesla still keeps on releasing multiple updates for the Model 3 and Model Y EVs.

  5. Define world's best. If total sales is world's best but 90% of it comes from China, it it really the world? Maybe if most sales comes from outside China it can be called the world's best selling.

    1. Yes if you compare EV in all shape or form BYD is number 1. Sales are around 4.5 million vehicles from all variants. 2.5m are pure EV to compare apples to apples with Tesla. Looking at the big picture BYD is massively ahead. Wait for the next cars of BYD like the Denza N and B series. 2026 will be a bloodbath for companies that do not innovate fast. Just because you were great before does not mean you can sustain it with features, quality and innovation coming from most Chinese cars.

    2. Too fast that byd forgot the most important things in making a car - quality and durability. Byd high on tech but low on quality. Even its tech is very low in quality compared to other china car brands like geely.

    3. Denza??? Your dreaming boy, quality and spec wise denza won’t stand a chance against auto/huawie, nio, xpeng, Li auto. On mass market segment byd china market share is being taken over by Chinese rivals. Due to byd poor quality, in a year or two geely will overtake byd in china

    4. People that keep talking about poor quality and durability of BYD cars always seem to shut up and not answer when you point them towards the Australian market and the kind of abuse that cars take from that environment.

There are tons of ownership updates you can find from that market right now done by vocal owners and even extensive reviews by respected mechanics.

It's also funny how these Geely>(greater than)>BYD people don't convert that logic into "Geely is actually a great brand on par with the Japanese," because if they're so much better than BYD then Geely should be even better than companies like Toyota since in markets like Singapore BYD is now #1. So, if (in Singapore) BYD>Toyota, and if Geely>BYD, then it follows that Geely>Toyota, right? Not that I myself believe that, but that SHOULD be where their logic eventually leads ๐Ÿ˜„

But I have a feeling that these people just like to see Chinese brands fight each other and assume that the rest of the market will remain untouched (๐Ÿ’ฏwrong lol). Honestly, your head will hurt if you try and follow their logic too far. ๐Ÿ˜…

    6. As opposed to someone who doesn't bother to cite sources, at all?

There are plenty of articles from professionals on the big business websites if you want.

  6. If you are talking about Australian market just look at the numbers it will shut you up. Byd only sell well in China the rest of the world just okay. Numbers back it up not perception check it out compare sales figures. Maybe if you see the figures maawa ka sa byd compared to Toyota

    1. Uhmm, BYD is up 77% in EVs and almost 150% total electrified car sales in 2025 compared to 2024 in Australia. Global exports by BYD outside of China for 2025 is up 145%.

The conversation was about quality and durability and not about sales in Australia but whatever; the numbers are not supporting you there either.

You can compare them to Toyota all you want (I don't care personally for either company) but choose the parts you want to compare properly because it's easy to find answers that either support or destroy your position.

Toyota total sales advantage is a given but they've built that over decades. The rate at which the world is accepting the new challengers should be telling about what the market actually wants. What am I supposed to be seeing to shut me up again? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜
