Nissan, Honda To Jointly Develop ECUs, Vehicle Software

Nissan and Honda have formally entered into a joint development agreement to standardize multiple electronic control units (ECUs) that form the core of its next-generation vehicles, along with the in-vehicle operating system and key parts of the middleware and vehicle control software that run on these ECUs.

Vehicles incorporating these jointly developed ECU and software will appear in Nissan and Honda vehicles from fiscal year 2029 (April 1, 2029 to March 31, 2030) onward.

Recognizing the need to strengthen competitiveness through faster development cycles and more efficient investment, the two companies have conducted extensive studies on potential collaboration when it comes to software. As a result of these discussions, Nissan and Honda have agreed to jointly develop and standardize the core ECUs and software that underpin its next-generation vehicles.

By standardizing these foundational technologies, Nissan and Honda aim to leverage their combined engineering expertise and development resources to improve efficiency, accelerate innovation, and enhance competitiveness through reduced development costs and greater economies of scale.

  2. It is high time Japan Inc should join forces or fall from the grid like many legacy European cars.

    1. They've been working together for a while now. It's just the pride of their respective managements that have prevented closer partnerships.

  3. Japanese are always very conservative with changing their technology. They need to aggressively redesign the car.
