Major Japanese car brands may face unit shortages or delays following a major 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto and neighboring areas in Kyushu, Japan. Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Daihatsu are all suspending output in key manufacturing facilities after the disaster disrupted key suppliers.
Parts makers impacted by the latest quake include a subsidiary of Toyota Group supplier Aisin Corporation which produces door parts such as locks, frames and handles, as well as seat parts, sunroofs and aluminum diecast engine parts; a local unit of Astemo Ltd.; and Renesas, a semiconductor and chip supplier.
Toyota had to halt production on the Land Cruiser Prado as well as the 4Runner and the Century at least until August 7. It also is stopping production on the Lexus ES, UX, RX, NX, IS, GX, LS, and LM.
Meanwhile, Nissan cited that assembly of the Patrol, Elgrand, Kicks e-Power, Serena e-Power, and X-Trail e-Power are affected by a production stoppage expected to last at least until August 5.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi says it will suspend production of select mini vehicles “because of damage at suppliers and delayed parts shipment.” The company didn’t provide a timeline for when it will resume operations.
