The next-generation Toyota Tamaraw is ready to ply the roads as a Modern Public Utility Vehicle Class 1 (MPUV Class 1). Toyota Motor Philippines gave a sneak preview of the Tamaraw’s latest body configuration ahead of its official launch at the first Philippine International Truck Show (PITS) this October 22 to 24, 2026.
First launched in 2024, the Tamaraw is a testament to Toyota’s proven Quality, Durability, and Reliability and has become the backbone of any businesses and enterprises. Some users have even found use for it outside its intended purpose as a workhorse vehicle.
In 2026, the Tamaraw received a Modern PUV certification from the Department of Transportation, three years after Toyota Motor Chairman Akio Toyoda unveiled the prototype. In-between, Toyota gathered and listened to the voices of the Tamaraw MPUV’s customers—Local Government Units (LGUs), transport cooperatives, operatives, and government agencies in creating the final product.
The next-generation Tamaraw MPUV Class 1 measures in at 5,068 mm in length, 1,785 mm in width, and 2,280 mm in height allowing it to seat 12 people—two front facing and 10 with bench-type seating. It maintains its extreme maneuverability with a 5.45-meter turning radius—among the smallest in the MPUV Class 1 category.
Powering the Tamaraw MPUV Class 1 is a 2.4-liter 2GD-FTV with 150 horsepower and 343 Nm of torque mated to a 5-speed manual.
Among the standard features include a 2-DIN audio system with 2 speakers, manual air conditioning, built-in WiFi, GPS, and front- and cabin-facing CCTV, and even an automated fare collection system. For safety, it has an emergency exit via the rear window and also comes equipped with an emergency hammer.
The Tamaraw MPUV Class 1 is locally manufactured at the TMP Santa Rosa plant. This means that it directly supports local employment and contributes to the country’s economy. The new body conversion gives opportunities for transport groups and operators to utilize Toyota’s trusted aftersales services as well. The Tamaraw MPUV brings accessible public transportation to the Filipino roads for everyone to experience.
The preview of the MPUV marks a milestone in Toyota’s vision of positioning the Tamaraw as a “National Car”.
“The Tamaraw is a workhorse—and a racehorse. It supports livelihoods, serves communities, and gives people something to cheer for. Today, we add an important missing piece: a jeepney. By becoming part of everyday public transportation, the Tamaraw becomes a true national car—a vehicle for all Filipinos,” said Toyota Motor Philippines President Masando Hashimoto during his speech at the preview event.
“Through the Tamaraw MPUV, let us bring our strengths together to make everyday life better—for commuters, transport operators, and communities. That is how we want to contribute to the Philippines: by delivering something people can use, depend on, and truly value in their daily lives,” added President Hashimoto.
