Review: 2013 Toyota Vios 1.5 G A/T

Photos by Ulysses Ang
Fifty percent of the Philippine passenger car market—by any standard, a car that’s as sellable as this is also the most influential. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise then that the all-new Toyota Vios is the most important car of the year. Forget cup car racing or DJ parties, I finally got behind the wheel of this hotly-anticipated vehicle and here’s my verdict: damn, they got it right this time.

With “Waku Doki” or “Fun to Drive” firmly drilled into my head, I can’t help but love the Vios’s new sheet metal that’s aggressive and dynamic. Clearly, the Vios takes its design cues from the likes of the 86 and RAV4 with its highly angular theme; well, maybe except for the 185/60R15 wheels and tires (the all-new Vios screams to run on 16’s at the very least).

Upfront, the new face is striking with an upper grille that seems to traverse through the projector-equipped headlamps. The lower grille is shaped in a trapezoidal fashion with a textured, blacked-out finish just like the 86. The head-turning frontend is matched at the back with the sharply creased taillights for a truly futuristic look. The sharply raked windshield and rear glass connote a very aerodynamic shape emphasized only by the use of aerodynamic fins on the headlights, side mirrors, and taillights. Even the roof is curved with catamaran-style cut to channel airflow much more efficiently. Clearly, the Vios is designed to be aerodynamic resulting in a surprisingly quiet cabin; wind noise is kept low even at triple digit speeds enabling me to carry a regular conversation over a Bluetooth-hands free phone—something close to impossible in the previous generation model.

With an exterior stretched in almost every direction (the wheelbase remains the same), the Vios promises even more cabin space with more head, knee, and shoulder room than ever before. In reality though, Toyota has successfully accomplished this to a degree. Sitting in front, I simply loved the additional room, especially around the hips, knees, and legs. The Vios eschews the latest trend towards deep dashboards and goes for a shallower design that improves exterior visibility and makes this car feel smaller and more compact than it is, perfect for jostling around in traffic. Drivers sit much higher and more upright than any of its sub-compact contemporaries and this takes some getting used to. Still, I found the Vios’s controls easy to master and they all fell within easy reach. The instrument cluster, moving from its controversial center location to a more conventional one, is legible with nice, clear numerals. But I certainly miss the adjustable dimmer function.

Over at the back is where things become more of a mixed bag. Rear seat comfort has been improved with large, individual, and adjustable headrests for everyone and safety’s been upped thanks to three-point seatbelts for everyone. Those with young children will love the fact that the Vios comes standard (at least in the 1.5 G trim) with ISOFIX child seat anchors as well. Despite all these improvements, the Vios’s rear accommodation is good for two at the most. The sharply angled rear glass robs useful headroom for those who have above average height. This is more so for those who’re stuck riding in the middle. I’m 170 centimeters or 5’7”, and my head’s already brushing the ceiling. Imagine if we were to go over a pothole. This certainly won’t be a pleasing experience.

In terms of luggage space, Toyota claims the Vios can swallow up to four golf bags; and I won’t dispute this since the Vios does appear to have one of the biggest and deepest trunks in its class. However, what I didn’t like is the lack of storage compartments for passengers. Yes, there’s a center console bin just in front of the shifter, but it’s barely enough to fit an iPod nano. The center arm console, though tall, is quite narrow. And though there are the cup holders located in front of the driver and passenger air conditioning vents, it can’t fit even a short-sized Starbucks latte. And even if you did manage to squeeze one in there, good luck in pulling it out without spilling a drop.

Gripes about the Vios’s cubby holes and rear seat room aside, I still give it two thumbs up when it comes to designing a thoroughly modern and classy interior. The dashboard is simply lovely with its dramatic lines, chrome accents, and molded stitching. Yes, the plastics are still hard to the touch, but the fit and finish are consistent. The two-tone black and beige color scheme is a ballsy move given the propensity for the colors to be mismatched, but the execution is excellent creating an airy feel for everyone inside. But of course, I can imagine it’s a pain to keep clean.

With multimedia connectivity fast becoming an important feature, the Vios finally moves to the digital age with full iPod connectivity through its integrated head unit. The six-speaker system is nothing to write home about, but it’s good and crisp; and at least you can command it through your fingers via the steering wheel buttons. The cool-blue illumination on the stereo (also used on the multi-information display) does tend to wash out in bright sunlight, but it’s not that of a big deal.

Now to the driving aspect.

With the very same platform, very same 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, and very same 4-speed automatic, you’ll walk away thinking the all-new model to behave the exact same way as before. Well, I’m happy to tell you that it doesn’t.

Surprisingly, the all-new Vios feels much more sorted with a sportier, more refined, and more comfortable driving experience than ever before. For starters, it’s quieter with just a hint of engine coarseness permeating the cabin, and it continues to be so until around 120-130 km/h, when road noise starts to be noticeable. Next, the steering feels more responsive through corners and though the Vios still tends to roll and understeer through a sharp corner, it does feel much more planted and stable than before. Then, the chassis feels better tuned to absorb the punishing undulating roads in Manila (say, those Ninja potholes caused by overnight rains). Lastly, the brakes which were a Waterloo of the previous models bite well and have a very linear pedal feel. Even the exterior visibility is excellent save for the rear view mirrors which I find too tapered, causing motorbikes to fall countlessly into the Vios’s blind spot.

And despite having a carryover engine and a transmission that’s down a gear (or two) compared to the competition, the Vios can surprisingly haul ass. It’s capable of speeds past 140-150 km/h on a long stretch and still manages to return the best city fuel mileage of any gasoline-powered sub-compact: 11.3 km/L, which is itself a ten percent improvement from the previous model. On the highway, this figure climbs up to 17.2 km/L when the “Eco” coaching light is followed religiously (you actually can’t turn it off).

Even before it was available to the public, Toyota predicted a huge uptick in Vios sales and considering the P 847,000 price, it’s certainly possible. Indeed, the all-new Vios is destined to bring Toyota’s product-led transformation to the mainstream. The undisputed leader in its segment, the all-new third-generation Vios aims to cement that further by adding style and sportiness to its highly successful combination of practicality, reliability, and value for money.

  1. " the Vios’s rear accommodation is good for four at the most" hey, would you really squeeze 4 people at the back seats?

  2. "still manages to return the best city fuel mileage of any small car" Have you driven the honda city and hyundai accent diesel???

    2. Surprisingly, the Vios (even the old one) does better fuel consumption figures than the City or Jazz in the city. When it comes to highway driving though, the City and Jazz do better.

  3. Wait till the new mirage g4 comes out, better specs, lcd screen, push button start, automatic AC and better mileage. :)

    1. We'll see. If ever there's a car that can probably compete with the Vios, the Mirage G4 can do it. Though, I'm really worried with the fuel consumption. When I tested the Mirage, it didn't do too well.

    2. there are cars that can compete with vios..but definitely NOT the mirage G4..mechanically speaking its a crap..as for the exterior styling..its also a crap..binawi lg nila sa lcd, push start and auto ac na hindi mo naman ma.e.enjoy sa ganitong class ng sasakyan..even interior materials look like crap..owww..sorry..seriously mirage has no contest against vios..i dont even know what the hell mitsubishi was thinking when they built this car..its a total piece of shit with toys inside..

  4. 6 Kilometers per Liter ang Fuel Consumption, 128 kilometers or 21 Liters of Fuel, Mas Better Po yan i Biyahe sa Manila to Nueva Ecija. Panalo ang Toyota Vios!!!

    1. 6km/l is nothing to a fiesta or jazz 9km/l upto 14km/l city only.

      Delete
    2. Why would take toyota vios when its design gets broader and heavier and the trunk still the same as the old one and the engine too?
      That 6km/l is bad!!!!

  5. where is the like button on this ? my sentiments exactly.

  6. With regards to its fuel efficiency, I would disagree. I drove the same model(1.5 A/T), from subic to manila, using sctex and nlex, but the average I got is only 11.7km/liter. I drove it with rpm not more than 2.5 and my speed is only 80 to 100km/h, expecting I would at least get 17km/liter. And now that I am driving it in manila, it just made things worst.
If you have some advices and/or techniques I could do to have an efficient driving, please do share it to me.. Thanks..

    1. Hi. In my case, I did my drive from SLEX all the way to the end of STAR and then back. I kept my speed below 100 actually--around 90 or so. I simply followed the Eco light and that's it. The fact that there wasn't any slow down (I have E-Pass) probably helped.

  8. I dont know what's with all the fuss with the gas efficiency, i drove my 2.5v camry, got 16.3 km/l . everybody knows toyota is all about practicality and gas efficiency.

    1. It honestly depends on what you're looking for in a new car. It's hard to compare the Avanza vs the Vios and the Honda City.

The Avanza is your only choice if you want a small 7-seater AUV. Though the new Chevrolet Spin is also worth the look, especially the new 1.3-liter diesel.

As for the Vios or the City, I certainly love the City's engine and transmission, but it sure is getting old. If you can't get a good discount on a City, go for the Vios. With a good discount though, likely, I'd go with the Honda City. Though take note that maintenance cost for the Vios will be lower.

I think you prefer speed because of your JERK skills in driving thats why you will not really enjoy this car since this is an economically friendly car / just for servicing per se good for city driving with balanced torque and HP.

btw i own 1998 toyota corolla, 1996 honda civic, and 2014 toyota vios.

  16. im a filipino working here in the states as a car salesman for toyota. interestingly enough the fact that most toyotas are used as taxis is actualy a good selling point for most customers. The fact that the cars is being used as a taxi means that 1.) its very durable 2.) its very east to maintain 3.) has great fuel consumption.

I went to the Philippines recently and visited a honda showroom and asked about a honda city and when the salesguy and I were comparing it to a Vios the first thing he said that Vioses are used as taxis. It really makes me wonder why most filipinos are so narrow minded as to see that as abad thing. I mean, BMW's are used as taxis in europe for christs sake.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mr. Antonio Salazar, kudos to you, Sir! Pareho po tayo ng pananaw. I totally agree that BMWs are used as taxis in Europe, and I've seen a lot of Mercs used as taxis in the Middle East. And yet pinoys who think that toyota cars are "cheap" simply because they're used as taxis here in the Philippines don't bash Mercs & BMWs. Tama kayo Sir, makitid lang talaga ang mga utak nila.

    2. nowadays toyota together with honda is more focused in marketing rather than redesigning their cars..just look at ford and mazda..even korean cars are almost kicking their ass..whats happening toyota and honda?..its sad to read comments on foreign car reviews about your cars..its sad to see you follow the path of suzuki and mitsubishi..although i was a very huge fan of mitsubishi years ago..i cant believe mitsubishi ran out of ideas..whats wrong with you guys?..c'mon wake up already..

    3. then why is that audi and volkswagen are not used as taxis?..and one more thing..mr. salazar you said you're a sales man for toyota in the states right?..then let me ask you this..why is vios not sold in US?..we all know vios is not a global model and we all know why is a certain car not sold in countries like US and europe FOR CHRIST SAKE!..and why is vios not available in US mr. toyota sales man in the states?..in my opinion cars that are not sold globally are low in quality and cannot pass certain tests..

    4. ^ because americans are huge...

    5. indeed they are..but the question is; why is chev sonic and ford fiesta available in US..as well as hyundai accent and kia rio..mazda2 is even there..and these cars fall in the same category where the vios is..subcompacts..WHY..

      Delete
    6. To the guy who was asking why the Vios is not sold in the states. Well sorry to burst your bubble but it is sold here. But its not called a Vios rather its called a Toyota Yaris Sedan. The name "vios" is used for the variant sold in Asia Pacific countries, although they are the same car. Same thing in the middle east, they dont have a "Vios" there rather its called a Yaris Sedan.

Your claim that the vios or the yaris is not a global model is as flawed as your grasp of cars.

      Delete
    7. i know vios is named yaris sedan in other countries..and it is available in UAE and other countries..and hey,are you really a toyota sales man in USA..you indeed burst my bubble but let me burst yours too..sorry but toyota in U S A , EUROPE and AUSTRALIA does not have 2014 yaris sedan in their line up..there is yaris hatchback though..and its still the same for that car..(australia still have the old model of yaris sedan)..how about that?..yaris sedan in USA?..you must be kidding me..

    8. in canada yaris hatchback is already refreshed and it does not share the looks of the 2014 vios.. >=)

    9. You never said you were talking about 2014 model. You just said, in general, that the Vios is not sold in the US. Are you new to the car industry? Read back your post. You were saying the Vios (or the Yaris Sedan) was never sold in the USA, you never mentioned what year or model you just said VIOS.

Btw you also that audis and volks arent used as taxis? really? try researching more before you start talking. You might end up eating your words and looking like a world class dummy.

      Delete
    10. cmon man..what year model is being reviewed here..whats wrong with you?..

i maybe wrong about audi and volks not being used as taxis cuz i was not able to research before firing back..but im sure were talking about about the 2014 vios here..that means you also ate your own puke..

and one more thing..yaris sedan was despised in states..and i bet you know what i mean..

By the way 1.5G MT Vios Gen2 gamit ko. Iba kasi ang hatak ng 1.5G AT sa 1.5MT.

  24. Hi boys. Our family has been planning to start a cab business. Recently I've been hearing bad feedback about this 2013 Vios from cab drivers themselves. Lumalaklak daw ng gas/diesel(?) kaya nilalayuan ng mga driver. Puro porma daw. Pinaka okay daw yung gen earlier than this new 2013, So I just want to ask how true this is from Vios13 owners?

I've been researching and all I gathered was it's basically almost the same with the previous generations. A little help here! :)

    1. I found the 2013 Vios to be marginally more fuel-efficient than the model it replaces. Again, this is the 1.5-liter model. I can't really say for certain with the 1.3-liter model.

    2. Thanks! And as far as I know, this 1.5 is too freaking expensive to be used as a cab, considering both the unit cost and the fuel. Tama ba?

I'm just curious bat di ginagamit dito sa Pinas yung Mercs and other brands for cabs which seem to be more expensive initially pero lamang naman sa katibayan.

The other two cars we're considering are Rio and the 2014 MirageG4. Can you compare these with Vios, sir?

  25. If you're not owned a vios before, and your're just being a passenger of a cab/taxi, VIOS to be exact. Then go for VIOS, you'll no longer be a passenger, you'll be a driver of your own VIOS TAXI car.Hahaha, what a shit!!!, imagine you'll just spend your money for a real FAMOUS taxi VIOS?Damn!,if you value your money you should a Honda. It values your money until end of iots day, in short, the resale value keeps high.

  26. hahaha nakakatuwa ung mga comments dito :)

Kakakuha ko lng din ng VIOS 1.5G M/T ko ... and i say na smooth ung performance in terms of driving .. tahimik (since bago) medyo alanganin nga lng sa driver seat kung malaki ka haha .. sa city driving nkaka 8.6 kp/l ako (Beginner pa kasi ako medyo mabigat pa tumapak sa gas :) )

    Reason why i choose VIos?
-daming good feedbacks e .. and it's my first car so okay na din to :)
    -"Easy" to drive haha
    -Mas tipid sa maintenance
    -ang LAKI ng DISCOUNT! ^_^

    Sa bad side naman
-Medyo Lumiit ung side mirrors.. (idk why pero naliliitan talga ako)
-Rear mirror maliit din.. so bumili p ako ng medyo malaki

Guys pa FC naman manila to Baguio :) may balak kc kami pumunta dun using vios 1.5 g

  28. Based on the comments here it seems malakas sa gas ang 2014 vios...makes me wonder why..same engine but bigger/heavier body? Is that the reason? I've read on the net Toyota says 15.xx kms/liter for the 1.5 variant which is obviously not true..I mean all carmakers claim better mileage than what is true.

  30. I have a 2014 Vios 1.3 E A/T and for me, it averages 7 km/l in the city and around 11 km/l in the highway with the eco light on. Also, if I fill it up with 91 octane, the engine creates a "rattling" sound like its having a hard time compared to no sound when I put in 95 octane. I also heard a lot of people complaining about the mileage and a friend of mine from Toyota Otis told me that its because they basically put in the old engine on a much heavier body thus increasing the cars weight. Overall, its a good car but mileage is poor for a 1.3 engine.

    1. Don't want to spoil much since I got to drive the 1.3 E A/T variant as well. Watch out for my future review on it. But yes, the 1.3 E isn't as fuel efficient as the 1.5.

    2. sir try using the fuel save sa shell.. and mas mag iimprove pa daw ung FC after 5k.. other average 10km/L naka 1.3 dn sila.. sa A/T lower ng kaunti sa MT pero di baba ng 8km/L..

    3. its normal to get rattling sounds if you are not following the minimum octane rating, at least 93 which is common unleaded.

      Delete
    4. According to the owners manual, the minimum octane rating for the VIOS 1.3 E A/T is 91. The rattling sound is now gone but still after 5k (had it serviced and changed the oil to synthetic), the mileage is still 7.5 to 8 km/l city and 10 - 11 km/l highway.

    5. I clock in 7.5 km/l on my 2015 1.3E A/T Vios for city driving. Rarely gets to 60kp/h and under medium to heavy traffic, and frequent stop and go traffic light condition. Using Caltex Silver 91 and I've heard of the rattling sound occasionally, but have not heard it recently after the 5k servicing.

  33. May pang bili ng kotse walang pambili ng gas?

    ReplyDelete
Vios is not bad for 1st car, sulit, matibay, matipid, maganda, and BATTLE TESTED kaya pinipili ng mga taxi operators..

Napapangiti nalang ako and i realized i made a good choice :)

  38. This Vios will always return poor gas mileage, especially the 1.3 variants, because of the heavier body. The previous model Vios was ideal at 1.3. Its 1.5 variant was an even better one, small body, bigger engine. I think the new Vios is underpowered at with a 1.3 engine. With a 1.5 engine, it is barely right. I love Toyota for its reliability and service. But the new Honda City gets my vote over the Vios, even if the Honda City looks smaller. It will outperform and have better mileage.

  39. For 1.5 G vios. Which is better, manual or automatic? Thanks for ur ideas...

  40. Some of the comments got me LOL-ing! Kind of immature arguing about this and that.

Anyway I'm gonna get one (or two or three or more after earning from it), make it a taxi, employ someone as a taxi driver and hope in this way I could help them in their financial needs. I look at a Vios as an opportunity car, opportunity for a good business.

I have a '94 Honda Hatchback by the way, mind you 'was my dream car when I was in first grade, now aiming for a A 45 AMG or WRX STi, of course I also dream of a Lambo, even one prancing horse would be awesome. But for now to get those, I'm gonna need me some Vios.

  41. sarap upakan nung nagmamagaling magpulldown ng VIOS oh...
basta ako, kukunin ko ngayong bonus ang Toyota Vios 1.5G AT ko para sa Uber biznes, whehehehehehehe.
